What do you need to know about customer service?

#1 customer is always right
#2 customer is always right
#3 if all else fails see #1 and #2 :)
that has always been my model of customer support. even if they are wrong, treating them as if they are right and wording your statements very carefully to not make them sound like an idiot, always makes for a happy customer (most times)
I'm just curious guys, are there any formal recognised qualifications in customer services etcetera?

I don't really think you can learn customer service from a book. That's sort of... umm, silly. To learn good customer service you actually have to go out and fail, so you can succeed later.

Ouch!! Why this attitude that running a webhost is somehow a virtual experience and the customers you piss off and the messes you create are somehow not real or don't matter?
This approach may have suited Chairman Mao but this is 2004. Too many webhosts are riling far too many of their clients.
A lot of webhosts are glued to the technology and the "control" aspect that they just don't get the basics. They don't understand that you don't close unresolved tickets, that you announce scheduled outages to your customers, that you don't argue the toss with your customers based on first instinct wiht no information at hand.
Reading a well written text would (or could) teach some of these oafs the basics of good communication.

I don't know, I'd think one could learn a lot from a book on the subject, or hearing a mentor, etc. It's certainly something that can be learned, though a bit of common sense and natural abilities don't hurt. There are many jobs and customer service isn't right for everyone (as I think we've all experienced).
Customer Service is just something you learn from your own decision making in dealing with clients.
Customer Service is just something you learn from your own decision making in dealing with clients. At a very basic level yes. Remember though that we have a lot of things to "sell" do a lot of "dealing" before we ever have any "clients". (I'm talking formative years here.)
Yes, I agree, you have to go out there and try first, so you know what comes up to you, you can practice with courses and books, but it can't prepare you by speaking to someone via live chat/phone/email
