View Full Version : Re-Arranging the Forums
Oh man I thought I was going INSANE!
Chicken, It's different, but it's better this way (I think).

I'm experimenting, you aren't going insane :D Someone else suggested it, and I was already thinking of doing it, so we're going to try it out, and add a forum or two, see if anything can be merged, etc.

I think it's better, going to take a little getting used to though.

You should add a forum called
Rant & Rave
And a forum called
Show off your stuff
So people can show off their websites and what not.

Ahh good idea, and then just link it over to the lounge at that other forum.

Isn't the website review forum pretty close to that though?

The new forum seems to be off a column on the index...

Chicken, you're too fast for me, I guess.

By the way - I think the "Server Software" and "Control Panel" forums can be merged.

I never used to use it either, but for some reason when I came to this site I just clicked on it to see what happened. And now, I don't know what I would do without it :D

Agree, always a bit odd when things are moved around, but I felt it was time to shake things up a bit. This way, some of the more general forums will be at the top, the specialized host forums in the middle, and ad forums at the bottom (though I need to make sure they don't get too lost down there:D).

As someone said, isn't the 'Show Off Your Stuff' forum, the Web Design and Reviews Forum? This might be split up (eventually it will be I suppose, if not soon).
As far as 'Rant & Rave', I tossed up:
Experiences & Recommendations
Do you have an experience with a provider that you'd like to share (good or bad)? Just need some advice or a recommendation from the members? Note: Ask for offers here.

I've had my eye on this one as well. Was just thinking about it about 15 minutes ago yet again, and this post makes me think I was right. Eventually it could be split up, but right now I don't think it needs to be apart.
:chicken:, there is 1 more thing that kind of annoys me.. and it's this:
The administrator has specified that you can only edit messages for 1440 minutes after you have posted. This limit has expired, so you must contact the administrator to make alterations on your message.
Can this be removed?

Ya I agree with Robert, it is kind of annoying. Giving Chicken more things to work on ;)
Robert,
6 more psts and your Posts # will be 666. Ahh the devil within!

I'm not usually one to post one of those "I have XXXX posts" kinds of threads, but you're right :D. I'm waiting for HHO to hit 10,000 posts, then I'll make a thread :D

Well, re: only edit messages for 1440 minutes (a day), the basic reason for that is so that people don't post something that freaks everyone out and then simply edit it days later. If there's no time limit, then basically anyone will be able to edit anything they have ever posted at any time. From my experiences on forums, this isn't a good idea. Any mistakes can be corrected by a moderator (past the 24 hours), and some things that people say need to be preserved (either for good reasons or bad reasons). It may be annoying, but we're more than happy to edit a post for you (past the 24 hour limit), assuming it isn't something that shouldn't be edited ;)
I may not agree with you guys on this one, will have to think about it.

While we are on the subject of improving HHO...
When will the "member of the month" type of thing start? :D
Operator, I've wanted to do that for the longest time. But there isn't that many people who post here. Eventually we will all be member of the month before the end of the year!

I've got something similar up my sleeve, but I need to get the goods for the prizes first. Maybe I could do a couple of test runs (but it would have to be announced, probably in an email to members to be fair so everyone knows about it). I might ask the moderators a few things before I say anythign else...
*cliff hanger*

How about a HHO unique vBulletin style? A simple from Ravio would only cost a $150-300. I wouldn't mind chipping in ;)

I thought I had lost the plot when I noticed the re-arrangement... I kept looking "Where have the Community boards gone?"
Eventually I found them up the top.
Don't get me wrong though, I like it better this way :)

Glad everyone seems to be OK with it. I do realize that making major changes to a forum...
...can :yikes: :banghead:  :yuck:  :bs: :soapbox: everyone out!
So we'll try to be very exact with changes and not do anything drastic too often. :D

Well, although I'm happy with this style, I do realize that it's probably on 1 billion forums, and there are a few things that need to be updated, so maybe I'll look into it. I don't want to create a heavy site that takes forever to load. I actually had talked to a designer before using this style, but without knowing what everything was going to look like, it was a bit difficult to tell them what I wanted (apparently this helps designers design, who wouldda thunk?) -we shall see.
Or perhaps we can make some modifications to this design? I love the buttons sets on here, just perhaps smooth things up and work on the header :)

What bugs me most (and this is mostly a vBull thing, not specific to this design), is that with most web sites, you have a place to navigate to do things. With the forum, links are all over the place, at the top -right and left, at the bottom, here and there, and it just seems like at the end of a thread, you shold be presented with logical choices as to what your options are, etc. I suppose some of it makes sense, sort of, but to me it is all over the place.
I think HHO should have . .. I dunno.. have a hosting directory

I'm not so sure I'm overly interested in starting a hosting directory, but I have a few other things to keep me busy.
