I want a FreeBSD server with mirrored drives and redundant power. I don't see much out there offered by the walmart style hosting centers. If you do find someplace that has fault tolerant servers, it's always part of a super quad xeon megamonster that costs more than my mortgage.
Why are all the servers out there so ridiculously over-spec'd in terms of CPU? On a unix system running typical web services I've never been able to get the peak usage above 10% or so. The bottleneck is usually bandwidth or disk access. Is it just because everyone is so used to Windows that they don't believe anything but a P4 will will be fast?
Anyway, to get back on topic, I'm thinking I will have to buy a used machine and do colo. Is there anywhere on the west coast to colo a 2u machine at ethernet speeds for under $100?
I don't need full managed but some support would be nice.
