I see this advertised everywhere. "10 IPs with Dedicated server" Why should I care about how many IPs my dedicated server has? What do they do for me?

Thanks.

IP's are needed to set up services on your server and connect them to the internet or to a dns system. At least one IP will be used to identify your server and network. You'll need another 2 or more for nameservers if you want to run your own nameserver. Then you may need a few more depending on what services you are offering.

You may also wish to have say, an IP only account (no domain name) for private use or you/your customers, may wish to have their own IP for their own web sites in order to keep a level of anomimity form you when reselling sites.

There is also a common belife that google pays more attention to inter linking beween those web sites if they are hosted on different IPs. The theory goest that if all the IP's are the same then it is probably the same server and so probably the same webmaster so the links are not a important as those form sites of different IPs which are more likely to have different authors. So some customers will ask for unique IPs for their sites for SEO purposes.

I know this is pedantic but correct me if I'm wrong... At least one IP will be used to identify your server and network. You'll need another IP (one) for nameservers (you can use the first one for NS1).

Correct, Chicken.

As far as SEO, we have a client that has 225 IP's from 11 different class C's on one server. Talk about a nightmare.

First you need it if your customer wants his own SSL cert....

Its also better to have a few in stock, most DC take a few days to give you more. Think you customer wants to wait, when they can go with people that have ips ready on demand....
