View Full Version : Crappy Forums
Maybe it's just me, or maybe HHO has opened the doors to a new world for me, but after being a member of HHO, all the other forums are crappy. Wht, Fws, SitePoint...they are all crappy. It seems like they went from being good to being crappy. Everyone argueing with everyone, everyone putting people down, insulting them, people posting stupid things that has nothing to do with the topic of the message board.
I'm glad that HHO isn't like that. I actually DO enjoy coming here knowing I'll learn something.

I'm not going to comment on other forums; but generally speaking, the quality standard of an online community depends on the COLLECTIVE wisdom and manners which are collaboratively moulded by both members and moderators/administrators.
And yes, I'm glad AND PROUD to be part of HHO. ;)
but generally speaking, the quality standard of an online community depends on the COLLECTIVE wisdom and manners which are collaboratively moulded by both members and moderators/administrators. I couldn't agree more!! Well said! :star:
I have to agree with the above.
a) I am seeing many new posts at WHT that are off-topic from what the forum is really supposed to be about.
b) At SPF, I have yet to become accustom to the new design.
By the way, I am new here as you can tell from my post count -- but plan on posting here more often in the near future. I am pleased with the layout and design of HHF, the content, and the people.
Keep up the great work.

It's not just you ;0 :D, and oddly I felt the same way, which was one of the reasons for starting this. I've read through enough b.s. to last a lifetime and this has been a breath of fresh air.

This is very true. It's your neighborhood and you although you might not like everyone who moves in, you can't rely on the cops to keep order. I know I've learned a great deal from moderating at various forums, and hopefully those who have been members at various forums have too :D

Great! Seems like you'll fit in around here juuuuuust fine. :D Welcome and tell all your non-annoying friends ;)
I enjoy it here because I don't feel like I need to take a shower when I sign off. I still have that 'all day fresh' feeling.
Also, my asbestos suit has been gathering dust in the closet. :)
The forums go from discussing web hosting to a host reviewing form. Then people say "so and so host sucks" :argue: and the threads turn into a giant flame war. But the mods usually don't do anything about it. I agree that people should be able to voice their opinions about a host, but sometimes things go to far and are let to continue on that course.
I also think one of the problems with WHT is it is becoming one giant support forum where everyone comes when the have a problem with their host and they expect something to be done about it there. There should be a big disclaimer on the front page of every forum that says "This is a discussion forum, not your web hosts support forum."
My $.02, time for a drink

I think I know some of the threads you're referring to, mtgm. There are good points and bad points about a forum being mentioned in CNET. My first thought when I saw that was, uh-oh, here come the shoppers, looking for Consumer Reports.

Yeah, and as a moderator I can tell you that it is never an easy decision on what to do with some threads. On one hand you know that these peole (the customers, some of them) probably have no other place to turn and are in desperate need of help and can't get it. That is the ones who try to email their host first, which some don't. 99% of the time the correct response is, "Wait it out or find another host!" -because if you aren't willing to wait out the bumps, or ther are too many bumps, you need to move on and nothing will change that.
We'll see about adding a big pop-up to HHO:
This ain't your Mama's web host support forum!
hehe. Good one.
Maybe that should be on the button instead of "Submit Reply".

If you notify the moderators, flame wars can be nipped in the bud. Don't just assume they actually read all the threads and new posts in their online time. What was fine 5 minutes ago, might now be a huge flame fest.

The "other" forums have always sucked, you just never realised it until HHO came about.
Well at least that is what I realised!
it's Jan's fault.
See? We can blame whoever we want! yay!

Except that we like flame wars, they amuse us :D. Its even more fun when you are a moderator. I personally like to get involved in a flame war with someone and then lock the thread after I make the final post :D....

Ahh, it must be good to be King!
Also I think some other forums have way to many young people pulling scams lately. Tends to mess things up.

Ya, totally agree there. And i've only really been here since well today.
Can't we make it so only reputable companies, and polite mature human beings can post.

Well, hard to make it so only reputable companies can post, but we'll do our best to give you, "polite mature human beings" at least.

I like HHO and WHT both. I find myself more @ WHt though. Perhaps it's because Quick Reply here doesn't subscribe you to threads and I'm too lazy to possible click 'Post a Reply' :) :D
You are lazy :uhh: :fork:

give it some time - I'm sure that when we'll have 100,000 members this forum won't be s nice :)
naa just kidding... :chicken:
That's actually the reason I don't really vist WHT anymore..

I visit both forums. I found WHT a halfway decent resource, and the stubborn streak in me refuses to just sit back and let myself be driven out by the drivel. I keep thinking that if enough people make actual contributory posts, we can turn the tide...
Yeah, me and Don Quixote are going windmill-tilting next weekend through Altamont Pass. Sancho refuses to have anything to do with either of us.
Unfortunately with any forum when the numbers increase so does the crap. Sad but true. Hopefully HH will be the exception to the rule ;)
