Theres this really annoying "power" button on my keyboard that my kitty keeps stepping on and the computer turns off... When I boot back up it gets stuck on the "Windows is starting up" screen right before the log in screen, I wait about 3-4 minutes and turn the computer off thinking it froze. I turn the power supply off as well for about 30 seconds and start up again, I wait about a few minutes on the Widnows is starting up screen and nothing happens. I restart again and wait for at least 10 minutes until I leave to the computer in the other room. I come back in about 20 minutes and it's now on the log in screen.

My question is, Why is it taking so long to start up? It's never took more than a minute max and the computer is relitvley fast. Theres nothing installed out of the ordinary that I haven't used before, any ideas?

Many thanks

First, welcome to HostHideout! :)

Which version of Windows? It shouldn't matter really but what I'd suggest is try deleting all .tmp files in case any have become corrupted due to the PC powering off. Also, check to see the settings you have for Power Management (in Control Panel, Power). I usually turn these features off as they cause more problems than are worth your time. This probably won't prevent that button from working on the keyboard though. I had a keyboard like that and after too many times pressing the wrong button, I replaced it. :(

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

I have Windows XP SP1, also deleted all my temp files. I don't see this being a hardware problem, might be time to reformat.

Might also be time to turn off that button, so that it doesn't turn off your computer when kitty steps on it. Go into your control panel and open the keyboard section, this will let you customize your kepyboard if you have the programmable buttons on it.

I know the keyboard I use to have I had no way of turning off that feature. It wasn't one of the normal options controlled by software. And trust me, I tried everything including completely turning off all power management options. Hopefully Guessgirl's keyboard allows for that to be turned off.

Thanks guys :) I fixed the issue with the keyboard, just made it when you press any power/stand by button it asks what do to before actually doing it and I just click cancel. The only problem now is that it takes an unresonibly long time to start up only on that one screen. If I don't figure it out I'll just reformat, I like to start off clean every couple months.

Heh, me too. Well not every couple of months but I probably reload my main computer once every 6-9 months. Things just go awry that make it necessary. The only reason I wait longer sometimes is lack of interest. :D
