Why do you need a rackmount to play around with? The case alone is probably close to $150, as opposed to a plain tower box which can be picked up for much less.
1) rack mounts are sexy IMO
2) i always wanted a rack mount... hell, i could host **** off the compouter im posting on... i just love rack mounted servers for some reason
3) i cant get linux on this box properly... none of my hardware is supported.
Now, on top of that, i have decided that my game clan needs a dedicated server and were all going to pitch in for it :D It would make a nice 30 person server.....
Anyways, even if you toolk a freaking apple and stuck it in a rack mount case type thing, id love it.

OK then, you have your reasons :D I actually used a rackmount as a home compouter for years. 1U mounts nicely under a desk where many people have pull out keyboard trays (this was an old desk, no tray). Also owned a couple of Cobalt RaQs (yes, I admit it), which were pretty neat looking as far as 1U servers go.
man, im in love with 1U's... I was thinking of mounting under my desk too, where there is usually a keyboard... Well, we havent decided for sure, my clan hasnt voted yet cause everyone is offline.
But, if anyone knows where i can get rack mounteds for even cheaper, PLEASE post! And please jsut keep in mind that it would need to be good enough to be a game server.... I wont need a big HD, i could live with a 10 GB... even thats too much, well only use it for one game.... maybe install another game, but thats barley 2 GB total... I could use 512 MB ram, SD, DDR i dont care... Well, i prefer SD. The processor can be as low as 1 GHz (im guessing) without being noticably slow.....i need a cdrom drive, and a floppy. thats all i need.... i dont care what kind of MB it is.
[EDIT] And of course id spend $150 or $200 on a rack mounted server to play with.... I love to play. Id prolly find a use for it afer anyways... Even though i have found one.

Uhm, it not because you have a rackmount that it will be able to host 30 people on your DSL connection...
$150 ? The case is worth more then that, you won't be able to find a new one that cheap. The case I use is $260..

Yes he can. AICMicro sells one for $169 and pricewatch has a few in the $150 range brand new. Cooling may be an issue in some though. Easy remedy, however.

Tech years... (divide how long it seems by seven). I think it was really only 2-3 years ago, heh.
Let's review the items in the picture...
http://hosthideout.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=48317
The desk has been replaced by a much larger L-shaped desk. The computer has been replaced two times now. I no longer use that external 4x CD burner (that's 4x CD burner, not 4x DVD burner mind you). The lamp in the picture broke. The 19" monitor has been replaced by an 18" LCD. Those KOSS speakers that someone gave me for free have been replaced with a 3-piece subwoofer system (nothing over the top, but much better than that garbage). And finally, the entire set up is in a one bedroom apartment, which has been replaced with a three bedroom house in another city.
At least 3 years ago, but maybe more. Feels like forever (thus you divide that by seven).

being rackmount wont make any difference to you using it on your dsl - either way it'll be cr@p
you want aserver for under $150 - you might find a couple of 4u 386's on ebay :p
a decent case alone can run to $300, on serevr hardware there really is no point skimping ...
if none of your current hardware supports linux, what makes you think soem cheapsh!te rackmounts going to be any different ?
Chicken, that's a HP 4x4x6 USB CD-RW burner, right? I have that exact model sitting in a pile of... "stuff" (no better word for it) on my left :) I shudder now thinking about how much that thing cost me compared to my new CD and DVD burners!
Otis, I gotta agree with all the given reasons why you shouldn't bother with a rackmount at home, and why you shouldn't bother hosting at home in general unless you have an unusually fast and stable home DSL connection.
I think the real question you should be asking is how to make Linux work with your current hardware. What exactly hardware couldn't you get working with linux? Maybe we can help. Give us all the possibly relevent details you can think of! Symptoms, error messages, version of Linux and distro used, etc...
Ooooo man.....for $150....naaa
You best bet is to go with colomachine or check out pricewatch. If you have some real nice rich friend get him to buy you a penguincomputing server......mmmmm so sexy.

Yes it is sir! Takes forever to burn things, heh. I actually broke the USB connection at the back and pulled it from the external unit and installed it in another computer (an older one). It works fine, just slowly. And I hate to think of what I paid for it, something upwards of $350.

You could buy a cheap used case from ebay and throw a cheap board in there... really doesn't matter if you're serving it off of dsl it will be slow anyway

You can get a Cobalt RaQ on Ebay for under $150. Be sure to get an OS restore disk though.
Enermax (CPI-567BN) 4U Rackmount but w/o Power supply can meet your budget.

If you are using the server at home. A rackmount is a waste. It will also be loud and annoying. You really cannot even get a case for that price.
But you can buy pc's all day long at walmart for $199.00
I was deveoping a search engine at home and needed a small network. I bought 5 Compaq 2.8mhz 256ddr ram computers complete with monitor from walmart for under $400 each. They are quiet and reliable.
I wipped the windows and installed linux, that helps.
I have one running now on my home connection that monitors the servers at my datacenter. Its cheap and its as good as any rackmount. Its actually better than many hosting companies offer. And many hosting companies do not use rackmounts because of price. $1000 for a 1u rackmount versus $100 for the same pc in a standard case.
Its up to you. But unless you are cramped for space, use a regular pc.

You could always look at http://www.craigslist.com and check out Computers in your local area. In my area I recall seing 1u or 2u's for about 40 dollars.
