View Full Version : Horribly sick

Wow, this never happens to me. First of all, I never get sick. I mean, maybe once every 5 years I get the equivelent of the flu or a bad cold, but that is it. Second of all, I have a stomach of iron. I can usually eat or drink anything and never get sick or an upset stomach.

Well, last night I think about a decade of good health caught up with me. It was like any other evening, made some rice and chicken, had some wine with dinner... then later in the evening snacked on some chips and salsa and popcorn along with a beer. Then went to bed around midnight.

Suddenly, out of nowhere at about 4:30 in the morning I roll over in bed and just start throwing up all over the place. All over the bed, the nightstand, on the floor... couldn't even pause for a second to run to the bathroom :(

So, needless to say me and my fiance had to spend the rest of the early morning sleeping on the couches in the living room, and I continued to feel sick all morning. Tried to eat some breakfast in hopes of calming it down, but no luck. Even avoided coffee all morning, no help.

I know it is probably just some food poisioning or something, but have not ate anything out of the ordinary or from any restrurants. It just sucks, feels like I have been run over by a truck a dozen times when I felt like a million bucks less than 12 hours ago :(

You need to go to the hospital. You are having the same problem half of Miami (Florida) is experiencing. You are also dehydrated and need fluids. The hospital will help you. You'll feel better real quick

Out of the blue, you being to throw up, diarreha may occur and other symptoms.

It sucks being sick. Sorry bud.

or at least your doctor. you need to be re hydrated. even if you only go to have it recorded then its worth it. it allows the repective health authority to collate information from the various people and work out where they all got the bug from.

plenty of water, not carbonated. no coffee or anything with cafine. try to avoid rooms which are air conditioned (i know a bit diffulcult in the usa :) ) rooms if posible as they will cause dehydration and you get a headache.

yours, doc hamster.

He's right. Drink as much water as you can. Not fluids, water. The human body needs a LOT of it to function properly, and you recently lost quite a bit.

Danger sign: if you notice that any light hurts your eyes. That means you're very dehydrated.

might be the stinky rotovirus - i had it 2 years ago, sounds just like what happened to you! ugh. it was AWFUL! If you aren't continuing to vomit, you probably don't need to go to the hospital, just sip fluids... gatoraid or pedialyte (hey, i know it's for babies, but it's GREAT) is great for replenishing electrolytes!!! Try to stay as well hydrated if you can. Also, if you have any or if someone can run to the store for ya - ematrol (sp?) is great if you're no longer vomitting - helps ease that residual nausea that lingers. (if you're still vomitting, don't waste the money, it won't stay down heh).

Another plus about going to the hospital if you're dehydrated and/or still vomitting - not only will they replenish your fluids for you, but they'll probably give you a shot of something to stop the vomitting.

Another note about dehydration - dehydration can cause nausea/vomitting!!! You vomit, you get dehydrated, you get sick some more you get dehydrated some more. Sometimes just getting hydrated is what is needed to stop the cycle!

Get well soon!

YES! Go to the hospital for a more thorough check. It happened to me once. I started vomiting, so seriously that my wife had to call the ambulance. The doctor said it might be some kind of food poisoning but I couldn't think of anything suspicious. Spent 2 nights in the hospital, stuck with a needle all the time; cost more than US$1k, lucky that it was covered by my insurance.

I know how it is Jeremy. I get the flu once every other year or so. But around last August, I got extremly bad Nausia which I think was food poisoning. Everytime I sat up I would lose it. Lasted like 48 hours. I would let it go for 24 hours from the start and if it gets worse goto the hospital.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. After drinking a lot of water all day and not doing a whole lot of activity the nausea has subsided. Still have the overall "sick" feeling, but it looks to be contained now :D

I don't drink much soda, but if given the option I enjoy regular Coca-Cola with a lemon wedge :)

I love Vanilla Coke! Unfortunately, neither of the minimarts near me stocks the stuff, and neither does the nearby Costco (yet...), so I have to trek a bit to get my fix.

Ditto only substitute lemon for a lime wedge (although they insist on giving me wheels instead of wedges and the wheels are much harder to squeeze)

wheels? are you refering to a slice?

Damn morning sickness ;)

Hope you're feeling better, sounds like a rough night.
When all other food fails, eat toast, it always works :)

Thanks, but I don't think I'm pregnant :o :D

All seems well now, it went away within just over a day, so I would have to guess just some bad food somewhere. But man I hope that never happens again!

I love when people pop in with all their medical advice, its just kind of funny. I swear I saw in one of my medical books that you're supposed to stand on your head, twirl around 2 1/8 times, and then hold your breath for six minutes :)

Now for some real stuff. Its all about the sports drink people. And the hospital? Im guessing some of you havent been to the the hospital lately, even in the most modern and over-staffed you're going to wait hours (unless you're a minor). Good to see you waited and day and it got better :)
