View Full Version : Gimme your money!

Yeah, that's right! Gimme your money! OK, I'll explain. I have quite a decent amount of paper money from many countries, including China, Japan, Mexico, Sweden, etc., but am missing many countries. Aside from just having a personal interest in paper money from various countries, I teach a unit on Money, in our Language Arts program. The children's eyes really light up when I bring out the cash and it is a good tie into world geography (find where the cash is from on the map).

So... here I beg you. It doesn't have to be much, in fact, the smaller amounts will do. If you'd be willing to send some money from your country, first I'll make sure I don't already have it*. Second, I'd be more than happy to pay you conversion, plus a few bucks for your efforts, if needed (remember poor teacher). Again though, smallest bills please. You can include a photo of yourself and a short note if you'd like to add some interest and a personal touch, or not, up to you.

Also, if you're cash strapped, maybe just a post card (even those cheesey ones showing the cliche tourist traps will do), addressed to the kids, (written in either English or Spanish please).

If interested, PM me and I'll give you an address to send money/write to the kiddies. :D Thank you.

*I'll try to post a list of the countries I already have soon.

I have an american penny for ya, but somehow I think you can dig up one (or 200) of those on your own! :D

Nifty idea though! I've never seen money from another country. (I've led a sheltered life) heh!

It's really cool! I have some which are really colorful and have interesting watermarks such as turtles and the leaders of various countries, etc. I suppose I should try to get some Iraqi money before they change it heh. Saw a post about people eBaying it, so that idea was probably a better one before the war.

Just paper money? I think I have a few British and Norwegian coins around here somewhere, but no paper money.

Ahh dang.

I had a bunch of leftover money from the UK and Euros from the rest of europe just recently. But I gave it all away as souviners because it wasn't doing me any good. I would have rather donated it to the :chicken: but ahh well. I'm sure there are a lot of Europeans on the site who can help instead.

does london have its own currency, dang. i've only got my rest-of-the-uk currency :D

i can do you some uk funds if you want.

current coinage:
1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2,

Notes:
£5, £10, £20 & £50

Quite happy to send off the coins but would probably have to ask for something for the notes. (£5 for instance is nearly $10 and i'm not that rich at the mo!)

theres craploads of history behind uk coins. so always a good teaching tool, and then of course you get to look at our lovely queeny too!

Something else you could check would be at your bank. I think you can buy currency from other countries at at least some banks, if not all. You will probably have to place an order for it though.

I have some of those as well, but I've found that they are harder for the kiddies to read. Bill usually have the country name and amount in larger type, and are generally more colorful and easier for them to see without touching (heh).

Re: Euros... I know I don't have any Euro coins or bills.

thebyp2, let me make sure about the £5, £10, £20 & £50 as there is a good chance I already have some. If not, I'd gladly repay you the amount plus shipping.

Hmmm, I never thought of that. Will hav to check into the process and see if I can get some there to fill in the blanks. Thanks for the suggestion!

for the british notes the bank may be a better place to go. even with commision at 1.5% its still cheaper than shipping. also the authorities won't start watching your every move because they think u are money laundering :)

Chicken,

If you need any Canadian money let me know. I have some left over from a few years ago. That, and I live about 20 minutes (hour and a half if you add the homeland-security-wait-for-customs-at-the-bridge factor) from Winsor, Ontario.

I think I have Canadian. Almost positive. That's one of teh few places I've actually personally visited, so one would think I'd have some. But if not, I'd imagine that would be easy to find at a bank. Many thanks...

Check out Federal Banks (anything with Federal in it), they're usually you best bet in finding currency.

Up in Michigan, Canadian coins are a dime a dozen. They're a royal P.I.T.A when it comes to vending machines. <-- You'd thinks since about 20% of the coins in Michigan are Canadian (most places take Candian in Michigan), they'd set the vending machines to accept Canadian coins.

Cool, I remember I was in a choir when I was 12 we toured England. We visited an elementary school there, and I remember I had a pocketful of American change that I gave out to a couple of the boys I met and they thought I had given them gold. Pretty cool :)

I thought the word ass was a bad word and not allowed to be said in schools, especially in Elementary schools. Naughty Naughty Chicken..:chicken:

Ohhh, and I have updated the first post with the official list that I have (if not there, then I'm adding it right now).

Edit: I started listing them and wooo, there are many that I can't really read type the amount or the country, 100%. So i gave up. Will scan in one day, heh.

I did find a site that scanned some currency from several different countries - i'll try and dig it up out of my incredibly unorganzied favorites folder.

You know, I don't think I have Indian Ruppees. I've ordered some clear pages for currency as the "all in an envelope" system I've been using doesn't work too well for keeping, organizing, displaying, etc. I have yet to receive the pages (so things aren't quite organized just yet), but from looking at a couple of sites, I don't have 'em. I'd love these...

India 5 Rupees (2001)
India 10 Rupees (1996)
India 50 Rupees (1997)
India 100 Rupees (1996)
India 1000 Rupees (2000)

In crisp uncirculated condition, if possible (willing to convert $ for...)

I am not pretty sure if I can find a 1000 Rs. note as I have hardly seen them in circulation (even the bank gives out 500 Rs. ). Rest, I can most probably send to you! Sent you a PM!

I'm glad you mentioned the Indian currency. I looked and definitely don't have any and in looking at some of the bills, they are some really interesting ones. Plus India is kinda one of those countries they should know about.

This all started when I was younger and my father would travel on business to many countries and bring back bills. I guess he never made it to India, though even if he did, it would have been 10 years ago (before those bills).

You can also try airports, as the ones with international terminals generally have a currency conversion service.

Sorry, I don't think I have any money that you would be looking for, mostly various coins from England/France/Germany, from before the Euro. Pretty common stuff, and definitely all coins.

I have several from Costa Rica plus I'll be there from 06-02-06-13 so send me a PM with the kids school address and I'll be happy to send them a post card from Costa Rica. Let me know to whom I should address it. I also have a 20 Baht bill I could send to you. Awesome stuff you do for your students! :dchick:

Yeah, I used to have a envelope filled with random foreign bills and some coins which I would lay out on a table and let them walk around and look at. That has evolved into a more organized folder, with some U.S. bills, etc., and now it seems like it is a 20 minute presentation. Last year (school year that is), I was able to bring it around to all 3rd grade classes to show more students. We have quite a few 3rd grade classes (11 or so), and it's a great lesson (that I expand for my students).

I'll shoot you a PM :D
