Still looking at all of my options. I found authorize.net, but oyu have to go through a reseller. What does a average account cost through a reseller and is there a preferred reseller? Or what reseller did you use? All comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Right now I use Wells Fargo as my Auth.net provider... and if you see this thread:
http://www.hosthideout.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=763
It gives a quick rundown of costs. I checked out many auth.net resellers and wells fargo was one of the best I saw. It is at least worth a look :)

Looked at WF, doesn't look too bad. Question though, how does setup work (besides the obvious site integration). I know Echo-Inc calls you and asks for financial records and such.

i talked to a WF agent on the phone, no big deal. They just wanted to verify I was the person actually requesting the service. Otherwise it was your basic online application and faxing a signature to them. :)

Sorry to keep nailing you with questions. What sort of a contract involved? Do you have to be a Wells Fargo member already? Thanks

Nope. I wasn't before I signed up. Infact I was going to just open a business checking account at a local bank, but WF made it very easy to setup an account with them and I figured why not. Now I have another neat ATM card in my wallet :D
But I believe you can use any business bank account with the wells fargo authorize.net, they are just a reseller, but also happen to provide banking services as well.
I went direct with Authorize.NET.

Tracy - What did you pay setup wise and what do you pay for fees (easier to ask you rather then to contact them).
Jeremy - Thanks. I don't mean to sound stupid but what's the difference between a business checking account and a regular checking account?
We use www.modernauthorize.com currently, it is aimed specifically at web hosting, and it has the best rates I have seen. :)
Also, there are NO setup fees, Discover has a setup fee of $25 if you want to be able to process Discover cards, and to get AMEX, you have to call AMEX directly. I love using them, and I'm sure you will to, everyone else I've talked to who have, love them :)

A business checking account is just like any other bank account, but it is in your business name, not your personal name.
For instance, say someone wrote a check for your hosting and it was written out to "Your Company Name" and not your personal name... if you take that to your regular bank they won't cash it, because that isn't the name on your account. So, you need a business account in the company name to be able to cash checks written to your company.
There are many other differences as well, but that is just to illustrate the point. Remember, your business is a seperate entity and should be treated as such. For all accounting purposes, even if you are a sole proprieter, always always always keep your money seperated :)
I would highlly suggest paynetsystems.com, they have been excellent with us and are easier to use then authorize.net's integration methods. http://www.paynetsystems.com
Ok, you can call me stupid if you guys want, but im confused after going to the following link:
http://www.authorizenet.com/solutions/inside_sales.php
It says "If you have an existing merchant account and are looking for an Internet transaction-processing gateway ....."
what is that supposed to mean? arnt they supposed to give you a merchant account?
kunal
Authorize.Net doesn't provide merchant accounts. They provide transaction-processing gateway. Your merchant account is provided to you by a reseller (like Wells Fargo) and provided to them by E-Corp (or others).
Robert, who is E-Corp? Also, what are the other options out there?

Robert,
You may find this guy can help you out - he's an Authorize.net reseller. We were going to go through him however we don't have a US address. He was very helpful in trying to help us out.
(I receive no benefit from posting this)
Here's his email to us....
