I just read a post over thier about a site rip that looked "similar" but not the SAME as the original. different fonts, spacing, pictures were put in but it was a little similar to the original.

The flames, arrogance, and whining on that thread alone is enough to make me not want to go back.

sometimes i just don't understand those people...

I'm finding myself going on WHT less and less. When I first started reading WHT over a year ago (even though I only joined July last year) there was a lot of excellent posts and a real sense of community but this is declining fast.

Rakmin - I agree with you there. Some people take the site ripping thing too far. I remember a little while ago there was a thread on WHT about an alleged ripped site that looked nothing like the original.

There are only a finite number of ways to design a site taking into account things such as usability; sooner or later there are going to be sites that are similar to other sites even though the designers may never have heard of the other site.

Same here. I find myself going less to WHT as it doesn't contain the same "useful" information. And besides, I can ALWAYS email Chicken when I need help!

And just to "authenticate" all of your guy's claims about WHT here's a thread: http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=121770

I goto WHT for about 5 minutes a day to get my laugh, then I leave.

One more thread thought I would share:

Username is NancyM but has a "fake" sig of "Jeff", hmm ;)? Freaky people.

By the way, That is one hard-ass mod who locked that thread, wonder who it could have been though ;).

Wow.. Just stopped by WHT and barely recognized it. Used to read the forum over their daily before getting preoccupied with other things and just came back a couple days ago to see it basically destroyed. Luckily I found a link to this forum.

So forgive me for jumping in on your thread, but hey everyone. ;) What ever happened to the chat room that used to be here?

Chicken took it down. Welcome Woody by the way.

yes, i think its way out of hand.. its good to be inspired by another design and add your own zing to it... but god forbid you actually do it. Then its a rip.

another standard case of WHT :bs:

That one confused me, did someone bump it again for you to close it, or did you go looking for it after reading the other one?

WHT? wha?

:D

I still browse and occasionaly post over there, but in the lounge the war threads are just too much to bare (bear?) I really enjoy the laid back atmosphere here, even if it isn't as active, its great.

JeremyV, there will be a few things happening soon that might help the 'less active'ness a bit. As this is the 4th month, I'm pretty happy with what has happened so far, but the next few months will have a few new things added.

Allan, I probably would have either just locked or tossed it. Your post bumped it and I'm pretty sure no one needs to read that thread again, heh.

We're lucky you did too ;) :D Yeah, as was said, I decided to change format from the chat. I still have it, and one day it might come back (in some form), but not looking to do that any time soon. What do you think of the forum instead? :chicken:

Yeah I thought of that after I posted my last response. Just delete the bump and close the thread so it is unbumpable. But maybe you want to show you are active :D

Yeah, at some periods somewhat active with hosts chatting, often about things unrelated to hosting (heh), and often not very active (need many people to be in on the chat thing for it to really work).

Yea...and that's why you are the master moderator and I am just your humble student :D.

I refuse to sign up at WHT, the only reason anyone seems to use that forum is to put down other companies, nothing but complaints and accusations...

Well, Allan is part of the crew now entrusted with keepin' peace and order o'er there, so I'm sure he'd appreciate a report on anything you see. But that's there, this is here...

Yea, I guess it is kind of telling that they made me a MOD over there, and I still don't want to post ;).

I still look at WHT during the day and even post on it once in awhile. At this point I look at it more for it's entertainment value than anything else.

I am not interested in learning how to sell my product for $9.00/year. I am fairly new there and even newer here, and fortunatley haven't been involved in a flame war yet. I do see some idiotic threads over there though. I just laugh and ignore them.

Keep up the good work Chicken.

best thing about this place is how you can look at almost anyone and they seem like your friend :) There is a high level of respect here, and the overall attitude is more mature. :chicken: rocks

Looks great so far. :) I did like the chat room when it was busy enough to have a decent conversation going but a forum does seem a lot more logical to at least build up a user base (if you do plan on putting that chat room back).

I'm more into reading than posting or chatting anyway (joined WHT in early 2001 and made barely 100 posts ;)) and it seems this place will be a lot easier to follow.

Well, I will say something (which I've said before), and that is that once you add 30,000+ members to our current user base, things do get a bit more tricky. Smaller forums tend to feel more close and friendly, however I'm now in a position to shape things as I feel they should be shaped. Whether that turns out to be the right way, we'll find out, but...

JeremyV

That's the thing chicken.. when you start off with a plan and goals of how to make it work, chances are it will. But by not knowing how to handle the growth and no set ideas on how to run the site, things just go to hell :)

I do still visit WHT and don't mind posting and communicating with others over there. It has changed since I signed up nearly two years ago, though. There are many people that will slam you if you even think the wrong thing but I tend to look past those posts. I think WHT needs to take a moment and look at what's going on to be able to "fix" what is broken. By adding new MODS most likely will help.

As for the Hideout, it is definitely a nice refresher as I've stated in the past. It's nice to go somewhere and not have to deal with looking past people that only seem to enjoy slamming others. Keep up the good work Chicken.

Know this is sort of a old thread but thought I'd post about something that I found rather irratating today.

I don't know what's been going on over at WHT with the mods (not direct towards Allan at all), but it seems as though they've been going on a banning spree. I understand a couple of the bans, but then they banned timechange. Now I do understand he gets on people's nerves sometimes, but didn't see much of a reason to ban him (he got in a argument of some sort with another user over a domain). Anyways I'm done ranting, and done with WHT.

Edit: forgot to add it was not a permanent ban.

I don't know they are ok but I leave that boar only for really formal questions... like reviews about companies etc. for everything else I come here :)

A big problem with WHT is that for so long it was only Chicken moderating a board with 30,000+ members which it made it very difficult to catch people violating the rules, so people kept pushing the limits.

Now that there are mods en masse it is easier to respond to reported threads, and seek out other problems that don't necessarily get reported. So, absolutely more people are being banned, but they are all being banned for violating forum rules -- people are upset because they went so long without being warned/banned for these violations.

It also means that things that the mods would normally let go are being enforced in order to bring the conversation back to a polite level.
