Hello, I'm a total newbe to the world of hosting. So if this is a stupid question, I apoligize. I have been trying to figure out how you get on some of the major search engines like Google and I see that they use link activity to place you or something like that.

Anyway, my question is, if I list with some of the host list when I get going. Will those links count or does it have to be directly with other sites. Any info or past exp. about this would be appeciated.
Thank you.

One very important tip;

Submit your site to the DMOZ directory.

this guarantees you a place in google...:)

If you have quality keywords in your content, they will soon pick you up. They will also pick up on links if they are not obscured in some way. Good luck

Although :chicken: why don't you volunteer to be one of their reviewers?

could help speed things along for you....:D

Don't worry about dmoz. I thought they were important ... until I learn the tricks to get on to Google. Now I don't need them at all. Just make sure which keyword string (or strings, but don't be too greedy) you want, and you could be there in a week's time (with the help of SOME "well-paid" search engine optimization professional, of course :D). Try "host hideout" at Google and tell me what you see there. ;)

And to let you guys have a taste of what it's like, try these search strings as well at either Yahoo or Google:
- china trade forum
- china trade report
- china trade review
- china trade journal
- china trade directory (this one is a bit less impressive though)

EDIT: AND NONE of these are listed at dmoz!

Sorry for a bit showing off here, but I just can't help it when it comes to search engine optimization.

Heh, I see ya'. If I search for 'hosthideout' (one word), it returns something but not sure that's 'in' Google per se.

Honestly, no one (or very few people) would search for the strings "host hideout", "hosthideoout" or "hosthideout.com". You'll need to put yourself in the place of the "searcher", and guess what he or she might type in that search box in order to get some useful information/websites for "hosting" or something like that. It depends on your target clientele and the industry-specific jargons ... hmm ... I am giving too much away, I guess I'll have to start charging per word. :D

You know... funny thing. my personal site, zannie.com - my top search string referral, sadly, is zannie.com. I don't get it.

Do you mean Referring URLs or Search Word/String Report? Only heavily advertised domains like toronto.com or yahoo.com would get dumb searches like that. First, ask yourself why people would know about your domain ... via off-line ads? Then, why would they be so silly to not just type zannie.com into their browser but search for it at say Yahoo or Google?

If it is Referrer you are talking about, that only means internal clickthroughs within your own site.

no, not referring url.... search word/strings.... i have NO IDEA why people would do a search in a search engine for zannie.com - when, like you said, they could just type it into the address window!?

It might be a browser or user issue. I know that sometimes when I type in domainwhitepages.com, either I might accidentally leave off the .com and my browser searches google automatically from the address bar. Also, for some reason, some domains that I type in get searched instead of resolve (browser issue?) and thus I get the results of teh search (the link) instead of the site. People may be accidentally entering your domain in a search box instead of the address bar (most likely by mistake). I've done that.

Ohhh I know, I'm not that disillusioned, heh. Thing is 'web hosting' and similar terms are quite a hot key word, so this forum probably stands no chance as of now, of coming up. When everyone decides to link to it (hint hint :D) then maybe it will get up there in SE rankings.

SEO stuff is kind of cool. One of the things I like to track for my personal page is my ranking in Google for both "allan" and "allan liska". Currently, I am ranked number 10 for "allan" and number 1 for "allan liska".

NS: Anything you can do to help me get to the number 1 position for allan :)

Frankly, being #1 with "allan" is not an easy task (easier than with say "hosting" though :D) because there is a guy called Edgar Allan Poe! ;) And the truth is: there ain't not much difference between ranking #1 and #3 or #4. I have to admit that it's the first time I actually visit allan.org (hey, you've got one more hit), but I guess there ARE things you could do to further improve your ranking. I don't know how customizable ScratchLog is (haven't used it) is, but it invovles modifying your existing layout at least a little bit ... Are you going to ship me 50 copies of your Network Security book in return? :D

well with me back in the day i was submitting it by hand every month on the same day for like 3 months it did help bring trafick up a LOT for a while but then it taperd off again.

with google now it invloves the use of the word in the site how relavent it is to the search and how meny other sites are linking to the site.
yea its a big pain in the butt but you got to admit i got to 4th place by hand with one of my other sites and im still up there (37 last time I looked) so im not to unhappy with it im just unhappy with the hits im getting from that (im getting about 5 to 10 visits a day from google/yahoo now)

good luck
James
