What file format are you using? The only way you can make any image transparent is by using GIF format.

Not true.
PNGs are far more developed thatn GIFs. PNGs offer alpha transparencies which I tried a few months back for some old site of mine ( http://www.dimitrix.net/dnet2/ Gotta wait a while till the big background image changes.. old host).
You wouldnt be able to achieve that with GIFs (GIFs are wayyyy outdated)
The only problem is Microsoft hasnt realized PNGs potential yet and unlike mozillla/firebird they have still to fully support it (on my site i used a walkaround to make it owkr in IE and mozilla)
I can help you out if you want to try it. Very quite easy (if you have photoshop)

I know that it is easy to make an object transparent on other programs. In microsoft image composer yu can adjust the transparentcy and you can do the same on macromedia fireworks. If you want to know where to go just ask. I never hear of ArcSoft, but if you switch to the other programs it is easy as cake.
