Which ones would you recommend? I have my heart set on the Canon Powershot G2 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005Q5U5/) but could I be getting a better deal or a better camera someplace else?

(I don't want to spend more than $500)

Thanks

My wife has a Kodak (3400, I think), that she absolutely loves. But, my personal preference would be for the Cannon. I've always used Canon cameras and loved them.

I've got a mavica fd-83 and love it. Not the best picture quality but supports the things I want.

Thing I like best about the G2 is that it can take 2-3 minute videos as well.

Most people do not need anything more than a 2 MP camera. Especially if your going to use it mostly for standard photos or online images.

I have a FinePix 2600 (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2001_reviews/fuji2600.html) that I've had for a year now. Decent camera (more of a point and shoot) for the price. Comes with everything needed including recharger. I did buy another charger that works in the car and a larger media card. Camera was about $300 when I bought it but I'm sure they are cheaper now.

Before that, I purchased a Olympus Camedia C-3020 ($500 at that time in stores), higher MP (4.0) camera with tons of features but had problems with it. Got pissed and returned it.

I got this one for Christmas. It isn't quite the caliber you are looking at but it takes great pictures for what I use it for. (personal pics) http://kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=9/19/487/104&pq-locale=en_US

I have the HP Photosmart 812! It's decent, but I really would like a top of the line product from Nikon!

Ive REALLY researched digital cameras and own the following:

Sony Mavica FD81/9? - This was my first one for $800, it writes to a floppy and is bigger, I havent used it in a year or so
HP Something (I rarely use) -
Olympus D460 - Normal Size, I use this for everyday pictures
Minolta Dimage XI - Tiny, 3 MP, Great Picture

The one Im really looking at is the Olympus Camedia C-4000
4 Megapixels, LOTS of control over the settings, allowing me to take up the photo hobby Ive always wanted but couldnt afford, and the picture quality is supposed to be great. Best of all, its like $350, unheard of for a 4 MP camera.

So there it is. Im a huge fan of the simple camera for everyday shots though, and I got my card reader making it real easy to upload to the computer.

What are you going to be using the camera for? And just realize that (as was said) a 2 mega-pixel camera is fine for most things. Mine is 2mp and 98% of the time, I reduce the photographs and make them smaller for various things, or do not wish them to be larger. For snap shots, 2mp is more than enough, and all those big images take up hdd space, plus the littel movies aren't of the same quality as my DV camcorder.

I have the Canon Powershot S200 (about the size of a pack of smokes) and like it because I can just slip it into my pocket. There are a few now of this size or smaller, and that feature is really nice. Easy to take anywhere and we take it places and more often than if we had to take a camera bag, etc.

I do like that G2 though. Seems like a really nice camera, but I was a photography major in college so I kinda have a weakness for camera and would own 100's if I had the money to spend.

I used the Olympus D-220L for about 4 years and it was great little camera. I just bought a new one a Sony Cyber-Shot 2.0 MP DSC-P51 and I like it a lot! I just use it for personal shots and it works great. I can also shoot MPEG's with it (no sound) which is a nice extra but not the main reason I bought it.

James, I think Keith (iBiz) has that one as well (or something similar, they tend to up the resolution every now and then). His seemed nice.

arpmn, I think I owned a Olympus D-220L as well. Mine was stolen at a club (not due to me, i lent it out to an idiot neighbor). Was it 640x480 max resolution? Took great pictures though.

Right now I'm trying to resist getting a traditional film camera. I have a couple already, so it certainly isn't a need thing. I was a photo major in school and ran a photography business for a bit so I've owned many 35mm, medium and large format cameras. The medium and large format is out of the question, but I'm missing my autofocus Canons and Nikons :(

I saw a used Canon 10s autofocus that I used to own, going for $165 which seems pretty decent. This was an upper-mid range in EOS line camera at the time, and really worked well. Light and easy to use, with most of what you need to do anything. Highly recommended for the price. I'm not up on the current mid range Nikons (the ones I used to own were too high range and expensive just for hobby shooting), but Canon seems to have a new ELAN 7e which looks pretty damn nice. Has that nifty eye control focus (which I've never used but always wanted to try it out) -it focuses where you look :D. Was just coming out at the time I was using Canon (which I dumped for the high end Nikon stuff).

Fugifilm finepics S602! I bought one of these and I love it. 3.1 mp but it has an optic package that allows it to put out a 6 million pixel picture. Plus it has dual memory ports so you can use both flash media cards and micro drives. I currently have a 340 megs microdrive, but IBM and toshiba have a 1 gig drive that fits it and a 4 gig in the works. Another feature that I really wanted was the use of regular AA bateries and ac adapter plugin. There are also a hole host of lens and filters availible.

My two cents anyway, Oh and hi...lol

4GB Microdrive? That kicks butt! Anyone else use their cards with the tiny USB readers as storage (like instead of a floppy disc)? They come in very handy. I don't want to know how much a 4GB CF card would cost (most likely not worth it for storage purposes), but the concept is neato.

Ya but think how cheap the 1 gig drive will be the moment the 4 hits the market...lol thats what I'm waiting for!

I have a Sony P5 and it's nice. I bought it per the birth of my son about 17 months ago and I've taken over 5GB of pictures with it. It takes beautiful pictures, I'm extremely satisfied with it.

I am also on the search for a new camera, but since I have 9 Sony memory sticks I am trying to stick with Sony. Seems like a big waste otherwise. I was looking at the F717, but am waiting a few months because I'm pretty sure a new model is going to be released soon (why else would they slice $200 off the price?).

We have also owned an Olympus camera a few years ago and it was a piece of crap. It wouldn't even take the picture half the time, drove me nuts. My aunt has a Nokia Coolpix that takes nice, clear pictures, though it has problems with red eye. Kodak makes great cameras too - we owned one for a short while and it took nice shots. I would recommend Kodak or Sony.

I recently got the Kodak Easyshare CX4200 and its a nice camera. Has a lot of lil features and whatnot and is a really decent price. The pics are crystal clear.....which can be a bad thing when takin pics of oneself.....all the flaws show and are magnified =/

Haha - whoops - it was late :p: I think I've done that before elsewhere too. Once I said "retards" instead of "regards" and no one caught it :D
