I've been researching newspapers in our local market that I am considering running ads in. Are any of you focused on your local market and if so, what do you find to be the best form or marketability? I know the obvious door-to-door, direct mail, and cold calling, but would like to hear what you have used and what seems to be most effective.

We have a high percentage of local clients and have had success with:

- Print ads in business journals, some we actually trade free hosting for ad space.

- Chamber of Commerce, in person and mailings.

- New business registrations, this is public information, our city web site happens to post them weekly.

That's just a few, and they all work. Keep in mind nothing happens overnight, your local community must be comfortable with you and your company or you won't get zip.

Newspapers around here have rather poor advertising quality.

I'm not in the exact same market as the rest of you, but I'm a web developer, so it's pretty close. I have quiet a few contacts through out town (as they say, word-of-mouth is key). Also check into things like Highschool Yearbook advertising depending on how much it costs you can get a pretty good amount of advertising for a pretty low cost and you help a good cause.

One way we do it is to have an X-deal with local radio station. Free hosting ... free advertising.

Newspaper... not yet successful on it. But, we will keep trying.

Take care everyone!

Local advertising is a fantastic way to hit a niche market fast - reason being that local customers pair quality customer service with the fact that you are nearby - even though you provide an internet service.

It means you can perhaps raise your price a few percent higher than the average going rate and retain your customer base.
