View Full Version : Windows XP Home Internet Disconnects
I have a WindowsXP workstation and for some odd reason it will disconnet every so often. I am sure it's not my internet connection because when I restart the computer everything is fine; I have also checked the connection on another computer and that one works just fine. I have installed all of the updates from Windows Update but still no luck. I have also reformatted and that hasn't helped either.
Anyone have any ideas???

I've noticed that (somewhat infequently) when I am viewing web pages and click on something, I get the "working offline" message box and have to click "go online" (or whatever it says) to get to the page. My DSL is always on via the router, so it's not a big issue, but if it was disconnecting everytime, I wouldn't be as happy. Is this what is happening?

Yup, it's disconnecting completely; I do not get a "go online" dialogue box.
Who is your ISP? And do you use their dial-up manager? if so try and use windows network connection. in the network task choose "create new connection" and get online that way.
Because I was using the AT&T dial-up manager and that thing disconnected all the time. When I got rid of it no more disconnects.

Have you tried a 'ipconfig /all' to renew the IP address on the PC? Are you getting a notice that your Ethernet has been disconnected, or does it just stop working?
Brian
I actually was able to solve the problem. Thanks for all your help!!!

Brian Well WindowsXP had already somehow created my DSL connection and set me IP to 192.168.1.100, but they had left the DNS part blank. Somehow I was able to surf the Internet a few minutes, then I guess it realized that no DNS servers were set so it cut me off.
