I've never though newegg had a terrific design either, and another local computer store has an even worse design. I think it's mandatory to have a crappy design with these places. Sort of goes with the actual store many times (industrial racks piled high with cheap stuff). If the store is too fancy, and the site too polished, you'd think you were paying too much ;) :D

I've bought stuff from newegg, was painless, delivered timely, no problems.

I usually buy from Micro Pro -- micropro.com -- although the past week their site is gone. :( I've been trying to get to them for awhile and I doubt it's just a server down due to the length of time they haven't been available. I've also purchased from places like NewEgg, CompSource (c-source.com) and a few others.

Also www.pricegrabber.com. At times their site has been better at finding lower prices than Pricewatch. I now use both.

There is only ONE place to buy parts from and that's NEWEGG.COM. For the last year I've been looking at these online stores and newegg has the best prices, and they ship faster than any other store online.

Other stores that I found quite good are -

Directron.com
svc.com
Googlegear.com - now called Zipzoomfly.com

Multiwave.com - they're good to but they offer no free shipping.

Another good company is YesMicro (http://www.yesmicro.com/). I agree as well that NewEgg is top notch. :)

For the past 5 years, whenever I was building a system for anyone, I always purchased parts from Newegg. Prior to finding NewEgg, I've always surfed around and tried to find the cheapest overall cost of major computer parts so I wouldn't have to buy each part from separate vendors. NewEgg always came up top.

Their support is fantastic as well, one time - I bought a lot of computer parts and its estimated delivery time was past the day I was supposed to have left for school so I've asked if they could ship the items that exact day. The CSR replied that he would ship them 2nd day Air for free and thanked me for doing business with them. :)

http://www.resellerratings.com - good site to use when buying from an online vendor.

Guess I'm one of the few in a big city with comp stores on every corner lol.

Step 1 - go into store A and get a quote for what you need

Step 2 - take quote to store B and ask them if they can beat it (get it in writing)

Step 3 - take both quotes to store C and they'll beat both prices guaranteed

Step 4 - take purchases home and it's play time :)

Being an electronics engineer I used to get all my parts from IBM but now that I've "retired" (aka quit) I generally prefer the smaller stores, once they know I'm not a newb the just give me what i need at the best price they can, no B.S. or overselling me.

I wouldn't trust buying from an online source. Lost of ppl swear by them but I just can't stand the thought of some UPS guy playing soccer with my ram on his lunch break :P

Krex.com and internetishop.com both seem good; however, I haven't used either of them myself, but their parts are very competitively priced.

What I don't get is what "wouldn't" people buy from newegg.com. First of all their prices can't be beat, second they offer free shipping on most goods, and third they ship your goods faster than any other store - I get my stuff in less than 24 hours. And the shipping if FREE; how can you beat that?

In answer to that, I can get better pricing from local stores than online and I can walk out of the store with the stuff, no waiting at all. The odd time I have asked for out of stock stuff it's shipped right to my door no charge by the store same day.

I need to visit Canada more often. :D All the local places I have to go to are always higher than most Internet shops. However, I must admit that at times when I've wanted something bad enough, I have just gone to the nearest store to get it. Even if I pay slightly higher it's sometimes worth saving the time waiting for it to ship.

There is a compUSA, office depot, and a PC club right around the corner from me (two minutes away) At compUSA they sell nothing but junk brand stuff (their own brand) and a very small selection of good brand items. And the prices at all of these stores are insane compared to stores online. At comp their selection of CD/DVD players are limited. Oh sure they sell Sony brand but they want at least $65 for CD-writer. And I thought the prices at PC club were less inexpensive but their prices have gone up since they opened. The only store that I would go to would be Fry's electronics. Their about six miles away but they have a great selection and their prices are better than the three stores I mentioned above. And when I say selection I mean SELECTION. I was like a kid in a toy store when I first went in their. But for me it comes down to price and selection. I see no reason to drive six miles when I can press a button and get my goods.
