Subscribe to Red Hat Network (subscriptions start as low as $60 USD/year). Red Hat Linux 9 ISOs will be available to paid subscribers starting March 31, 2003--a week before they will be available on redhat.com, in stores, or on Red Hat FTP.

Yea, I've gotten a number of spams about 9.0 today, Red Hat is really pushing it, but I am a little concerned with how fast these kernels seem to be coming out (or maybe I am just getting old and slow :)). I think with Red Hat's new retirement policy, this means that 7.x will stop being supported by the end of the year :(.

Maybe I was locked in a cave but didn't 8 just come out? Also do you think its worth being a paid subscriber?
How I see it is Paid Users = beta users
They test the software before it goes "free" and fix all the "bugs" they encounter. Heh.
Actually one of the companies I work for is a paid subscriber to RHN and we really like it. Makes it simple to install new software from packages, get latest ISO's, and keep everything updated without needing TOO much technical knowledge.

On the pricing it says $60 per year per server? What's the deal with that?
its pretty self explainitory... its $60/server/year
In the "RHN CP" you can have lists of servers that are connected to the rhn. The $60 is for a "entitlement" to allow a server to grab updates. One good thing is that you can use 1 entitlement for multiple servers if you dont mind moving the entitlement around in the CP. However, if your forgetfull like myself.. you'll buy an entitlement for every server and crontab the up2date command. You only need 1 entitlement to be able to download the iso's and stuff like that... all the entitlements allow you to do is update your systems.
The downfall is that now the life cycle of RH releases is 1 year. All the released versions of redhat, right now 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, will stop recieving updates on 12-31 of this year wether they have an entitlement or not. So to keep using the RHN i must keep all of my servers on the LATEST version of redhat. When RH9 is released its life cycle will likely end on 4-7-04.
I had redhat 8.0 on one of my desktops for a few months. I liked it, it was pretty user friendly but bluecurve and gtk got totally screwed (I don't think it was my fault, but who knows) and it wasn't worth the effort IMO to try and fix it. I now run Mandrake 9.0 and I have had no problems with it. Of course that's useless information if you're running redhat as a server :p:
I just hope this jump from 8.0 to 9 doesn't compare to Windows 98's jump(:bs:) to Windows ME

LOL. I manage around 10 servers for several clients know. I have suggested it to them, but wasn't exactly sure on it. I saw there's a OS (opensource) project on SF.net that is basicly the same thing as up2date, but it uses a different server.
