I've always been a big fan of Intel, due to the fact they are extremly stable. But the new AMD Xp's aren't too bad. For servers do you think that amd is better than intel (considering cost and all).

The cost for an AMD system is much cheaper than the cost of an Intel System.

I am a AMD Fan all the way, but when it comes to servers, I'd stick to Intels simply because they do not get as hot as AMDs do.

True that. I have a few amd boxes, and right now have a problem with cooling (not too serious but still).

Yeah I would say at the moment, AMD for home, Intel for servers. I had previously been INtel all the way, but I can't argue with the prices of the AMD equivilants. :)

Just to agree with everybody else. Intels for servers (well some intels) and amd for home.

Intel P3 :D We have one and it behaves really well, much better than the rest of our servers.

I guess I'm not much different... but use AMD in most home machines, but intels in servers. I love the bang/buck ratio of AMD and their stellar gaming performance, but in mission critical environments like servers, i'd rather stick to the cooler running and tried and true intel solution :)

How about the celeron processor? How does that perform? :)

If you have a busy server a celeron won't do.

Although that depends on what its for... if your budget is tight and its to host a few sites only, then it may still be wise (and economical) to get a celeron IMO.

Ahh - misread you Navin. I didn't notice the word "busy". :)

Based on my experience, which is admittedly a few years out of date, Intel is definately the way to go for servers. I also use Intel in my home PC -- but with such competitive system pricing these days, unless you are going for a high end system the price difference seems to be minimal.

anyone had a chance to play with the new centrino chips yet (though obveously not for a server environment).

Celerons should be banned. :D

Celerons, and AMD's Duron's are horrible. They may be "cheap" but they are also slow.

i've got a couple of durons (admititly because a user requested the build) but they aren't really that slow.

AMD for workstation PC's, AMD for servers. Intel is a server chip as well but I've always liked AMD and won't mind using them for either platform. Cooling is never a problem is you put the right cooling systems in them. I've never had a problem with cooling on AMD's even dating back a few years. But, Intel is still fine and if needed, would still be used.

The new AMD Xp's IMHO kick the Celeron 2's butt and compete real well with the P4's. They are also pretty cheap. Old celerons are ok but don't work too well for servers.

I've got 2 AMD desktop machines and a P4 in my laptop. When I build my next machine I'd probably go back to Intel just for a change (not had a deskptop Intel machine since a P3 550 many years ago), but AMD's are certainly quick chips.

I just think they're the worst chip on the market.

i think thats an overreaction. i have a number of amd's at home and a number for servers and they are only marginally different. the only real problem is keeping them nice and cool.

Bryan why you thikn they're the worst chip on the market? Im sure you have a reason for thinking what you think!

But i know of many people who jsut take on the generalisation that celeron chips are bad when really just because they're lower-market and cheaper, doesnt really mean that speed and reliability is sacrifificed.

In my network testing i have a celeron 1.7ghz running smoothly with cpanel, linux red hat 8, 512mbddr ram@2700 and a 40gbhdd. Works a treat and has a 78 day uptime (that means its been on ever since i had it delivered to my place!)

tried AMD 2200+ with an asus board with a gig of ram for a file server.

well i cramed 10 scsi raid 5 array and the system in a Intel SR5000 chassis with 4 fans plus cpu fan and baby did it fry!!!! lasted 2 weeks.

moved to dual 1.8 xeons with a supermicro mobo and so far it's been up since one week after 2k3 was relesed, so that was april.

god i love 2k3

Celerons are what those little script kiddies get who think they can be a host in one week and offer their customers a decent service.
