Hello,

I am interested in having a paid advertisement on HHO.

Do you have any options or is this a no-go?

Thanks!

It's nota no-go but i don't think Chicken has sorted the policies and prices for this yet if i remember from an older post but this may have changed... just wait for Chicken's reply he'll have the sure answer.

We all want to advertise on HHO.

But I think that have no advertising creates a neutral environment and if funding is needed to continue to support these forums, I'd be happy to assist.

Wit all due respect, the last place you'd want to advertise is on HHO. I mean we're all hosts here. If anything, advertise on webhostingtalk.com, at least it gets tons and tons of new people (nothing personal Chicken).

With all due respect, WHT is a piece of trash site with a bunch of scam artists running around making everyone there look like fools. :)

It's not where you market your product, but it's how you market your product.

I really hope it don't come to the point where we have to have banners and stuff on HHO... not that its a huge bother but I think thats what makes HHO great is that its not a huge AD.

There are a lot of us that would like to market services here. But, the nice thing about HHO and why I came here is the class, professionalism and the overall level of people here.

There are no flame wars, there are no mods that feel that they walk on water. We all get along, I am more willing to do something for people here then I am at WHT.

The lack of advertising does keep HHO a level environment. I would like it to stay that way.

I can tell you this, that there are a bunch of us that if we notice that HHO is in some way heading down the WHT path. We wont be affriad to be vocal about it and let Chicken know.

If Chicken could use the extra $$$ to feed the Mrs. and the Nugget, he'll have to generate de green one way or another.

I personally don't see much of anything wrong with banners, especially if it goes a long way to help keep the "coop" maintained... although I also have to admit that obviously, not having any does have its benefits.

So with the costs of operating this site, what other business models would you suggest? ... There's the folks here who are "happy to assist" support it (Robert et al), then there's the plain ol' "Donate" button... then there are "text ads" or GoogleAdWords, which would be a nice compromise (if allowed)... wonder how effective that'll be (though some people swear by it)...

To answer the thread starter's question, at this exact moment we do not have options, but we will for a few reasons.

The main reason that advertising wasn't offered (from the start) is that I came from a forum with plenty of advertising and honestly, *I* needed a break from it, and thought others might feel the same way.

I do not mind advertising on web sites so long as it is done in an expected and moderate manner. To me that means that the advertising makes sense (for both the advertiser and the visitor) and is not overbearing (millions of blinking banners and buttons and tricky links all over the place).

One of the reasons we have advertising forums is that I feel it is important for members to be able to offer their services to other members, and for members to request services from other members. This is a feeling that is derived from my thoughts of local businesses. It means that I make it a point to shop at the small market two blocks from my house, at least as often as I shop at the big chain store.

Likewise, I do feel that while discussion of web hosting related topics is important, it is equally important to provide a channel for people to, "get the word out about [your] company" and be successful. It is why I hope the Promotion forum becomes one of the most popular forums here, especially in regards to local promotion.

Robert brings up a good point regarding what to advertise here, and I can't say that it's been tested one way or another. Once it has, someone needs to examine the ad to determine if the ad could have been more effective, or if the market is simply wrong. Many failed advertising campaigns are due to execution (wrong place, wrong product/service, and/or wrong ad). Just because you advertise in Ping!Zine and don't get results does not mean Ping!Zine could not get you gfood results. You may need a different ad location within the magazine, you may need to offer a different service/product, or you may need to rework the ad to be effective.

A long, long, long time ago, in a land far, far away I was in graphic design and my advice to you is that if you are not a marketing genius, either hire someone who is, or study successful ad camplaigns and mimic them. Robert said, "It's not where you market your product, but it's how you market your product." -and likewise, it's not only how you market your product, but where you market it. :D

If I felt that donations were enough to keep a site going, I'd try it, but I think it simply wouldn't work, and thus I'd hate to be a position where people donated and then I had to scrap that and have advertising. I can see that being ugly.

When I started moderating at other forums, there were 350 members and the whole thing was on a small shared hosting plan. Now with over 50,000 members, it now uses a cluster of 7 servers (though I'm sure it could be set up with less). I will be building fund for the forum, and for the site, and bringing additional elements and resources to benefit the community. Soon.

Heh yes... this forum does fine on one Celeron 1.4 with a gig of RAM, but eventually, that won't cut it.

I would like to advertise too and would, on another note, be willing to contribute to a HHO donation fund in case advertisements will not be.
