View Full Version : Web Hosting Community "Meetup?"
Hello!
I know many communities, LiveJournal, Blogger, SlashDot, Bands, and other "groups" do meetups (http://www.meetup.com/). I was wondering if this has ever been done in the Web Hosting community. I know vito tried to put something together that ultimately fell apart, but has this ever been successfully done? I know for many its a problem because our community has a huge population of minors and those without licenses, but do you think this has any potential? Just wondering what your thoughts were :)

Yeah, one of the better places probably would have been the WHExpo, which I didn't go to (I think that's what they called it). Far as I know, the magazine and the expo are on hiatus, though I'm not sure if I'd really enjoy much more than meeting people. I suppose that's the point.
hrmmm this could be good.
but it could be bad in the same light everyone would be tight liped about whats going on in there business:)

I don't know James. There's quiet a few people who are on WHT, HHO, and such that aren't hosts. Such as myself (programmer).

I think someone once had the idea to have regional meetups. While I like many people I've talked to and would love to meet them, it is hard from me to take a trip to the East Coast just for that purpose. Now if it were held in L.A., that's no problem :D

That wouldn't be too bad. How far is Fremont or whatever from you? HE Has a pretty good size conference room I believe.
If you are talking about organizing a group of web hosting for some form of regulation, that was discussed in the past and a couple of meetings were held on the subject by some of the top hosting companies. But alas, nothing ever came of it.
If you are talking about having some form of convention for web hosts, whmag did a very successful one a couple of years ago and we (Ping! Zine) are looking to continue the tradition in the near future (fall 2003 or spring 2004)

Well iBiz if you need help on setting up one in the feature let me know. I would be very interested. I was thinking some sort of a convention, or large "gathering". Not really a expo or anything but ya

Why can't hosts on WHT or HHO be around the Saskatchewan, Canada area? :P

Although I'm not actually a host, I'm kind of "around" Saskatchewan. My parents have been living there before moving to Toronto. ;)

Fremont seems to be in the San Franciso area (about 6 hour drive-ish from me). L.A. anyone... L.A. ??? I was thinking of a web hosting margarita-meetup, and didn't realize this was to be organized in any way :D

So your parents used to live in Saskatchewan? That's cool. :)
Sorry to get off topic.

I'm in Saskatoon, and it's cold here, really windy. :P
Homeless check WHT. They're currently planning a meet up. Forgot the thread tho :(
Free food for invites only plus some of the tabs of non invited will be picked up too. You pay for your own airfare.

I am pretty sure there is one being run by headsurfer( the owner of RS ) over at WHT :) I belive he is only paying airfair and hotel for people on the list but I also heard others are welcome to go and join them just that he isn't paying for them :P

w00t! Should it be an organized type thing, or just a casual 'night out' type thing? Heck, I'd even have people over the house, now that I have a house and a backyard :D
Maybe an informal type thing to start with and see what kind of turnout you get. Your backyard would probably work out just fine. I could even have something at my house. I live up in the Lake Arrowhead area so it might be a little drive for people. I am willing to help out anyway I can though. I think it could turn out to be a good thing for people top get together and socialize.
