What exactly is a VDS, how do you set one up, what software is required. All those kinds of questions i want to know, since im usually the type to stick to the basics, but it seems to be a semi hot product.
Heh  gotta love that smiley!

VDS == Virtual Dedicated Server. It's software (usually) that let's you take a *nix box and split it into serveral "virtual" servers. Each of the virtual servers has it's own root, can be rebooted by itself (normally).
Ensim has been in the VDS market for a long time. freevsd (http://www.freevsd.org/) is a free one. There is a newer once called Virt-something (the name escapes me now).

Why don't people just go dedicated then?

Price points mostly.
For something like a large forum a shared account might be too small, but a full dedicated is too big/expensive. VDS's fit the niche between the two.

I think even RaQ is better than VDS/VPS cos atleast resources are not restrained.
So many companies are offering dedicated servers for as low as $50.
VDS are very expensive right now but soon they either come down or will be gone.

Believe me, there are some people willing to pay quite some money for VPS/VDS. Not everybody will jump for a $50/month server. In fact, some people will avoid them like a plague. Believe it or not! ;)

Even if I was a customer wanting a dedicated server, I wouldn't buy it from a company that cheap. Rackshack is decent for low-resource servers, but you really get what you pay for.
