Hi. First of all please excuse my ignorance.
I have a website running on win2k server. through a small router then to a cable modem to the internet.
My domain is at registered at domain-maniac.com, I am using their url forwarding to my ip address with cloaking. It works but I am finding some problems with with cookies on the client side after having users go to the domain name instead of the ip#. Also if I try and navigate to any page within the domain name like: "http://www.mydomain/otherpage.asp" it just goes to root of site. My other issue is with the forwarding page at domain maniac I have no way of changing this page to add meta tags, etc.
My question is can I run my own name server? I have win2k server and I see where I can install a dns server from the cd, but not sure if this is my best choice? I have only one outside ip(cable modem) Don't I need another outside IP to tie with the dns server? Or can I use the same one my web server uses? what about secondary name server? Domain Maniac has a place for me to create name servers based on my domain an asks for a ip of server, and also that dns must be set up on server, does win2 server work for this?
Or are there any free nameservers I can point to from domain maniac, then have the name server point to my IP without using a forwarding page?
Thanks In Advance for Any Help!
And Again, Sorry for the dumb question.

DNS need 2 IPS.. Just sign up with zonedit.com and you can point your domain to your IP..

Unless port 80 is blocked..

You need two static IPs to register both name servers. Good luck on the free thing.

Unless your ISP can assign you two static IPs, no.

Who is your ISP? Do they block port 80?

Well.. can you access your server by going to your IP?

ie. if 24.24.24.24 was your IP, would it take you to your server or would you need to go to something like 24.24.24.24:8080 ?

No, Comcast port 80 is not blocked. If you use a firewall, however, there may still be connection issues depending on policy settings and such.
