you have a few ways

1) Burn them to a CD
2) Zip them, upload them to your website, and download them to the new computer
3) email them
4) physically remove the hd from Computer A, connect it as a slave in computer b and transfer them over

If you have network cards in them you could always get a crossover cable (or a switch and two straight throughs) and transfer the files that way.

Sure can.. but that would require some knowledge on networking..

You just need 2 NICs and 1 crossover cable.

Put 1 NIC in each computer. Hook the cable up.

Go to serv-u.com or the like. Get the FTP server program.

Install it in either computer.

Run the FTP server program on one computer and run a FTP client on another.

have the ftp client connect to the server.

TO find out the IP of the computer the server proggy is on do this;

Click Start > Run > CMD (press enter)

Type ipconfig

In your FTP client use the IP given.

And you can download all your files from the old comp. :)

Any questions? Drop me a PM.

Downloading FTP?
Seems clunky, when you can just tell Windows to share C: on the old box temporarily, and copy out using Explorer, no?

Can be done as well, only if it worked well half the time.

How about www.laplink.com

...allows you to connect via modem, TCP/IP, Internet or cable. New in version 11.5 you now can directly connect via LapLink's serial, parallel or USB cable. All you need to do is plug in your cable to get started!

I'm surprised that no one mentioned good ol' 1.44MB floppy disks! ;)

Seriously, in the future, you'll want to invest the <$150 on a DVD burner. ~4.5GB of data can fit on one disc. I just moved computers and my it was nice to have some beefy discs full of my files both on vacation and for the new computer.

From what I've seen.. new computers aren't even coming with Floppy drives.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about ftp'ing it, I'd share the drive with the info and just do a copy.

Like others have mentioned, you might want to just network the computers and share a folder. Drag all the files over..

That way your husband wont flip out on you. :)

Plan B (there is always a plan B - at least on Stargate)
1. Move the harddrive over. Start the transfer. This is going to take a while.
2. Distract Gary so that he doesn't even think about using the computer. Maybe even a dinner out.
3. Move the drive back.
4. Gary looks forward to the next time you need to take his computer down.

She has Cable/DSL.

She needs to upload 500MB.. Zips it up. Uploads it. Takes probably hmm an hour. Uploads it to her Server (she has a web hosting company).. then she downloads it to her new system.

Time: 1 hour and 50 minutes or so.

Where did you get 500mb from? Her post said 2.5GB.

Robert

I misread.. thought she said 500-600mb, instead she said 600 files.

I've done the ftp thing before, I just did it through a router instead. Worked fine.
