I am trying to start a website for a restaurant in Los Angeles and the owners would like a .la domain name.
I noticed it cost $50.00....just for registrations.

I wanted to use godaddy.com but it doesn't offer .la

??? what do I do????

Thanks,

Tell the owners not to fall for the marketing hype, .ls is not Los Angeles, just like .tv is not Television, the two-letter TLDs are all country codes.

Do I feel sheepish...
Thanks for the info allan.

what do I do now? Go back to the drawing board & come up with another name "barcelona.la" is the one I wanted???

Thanks for saving me some bucks,

Where did you find it? I thought the registrar site was http://www.laonet.net/ but it is down (maybe just temporarily?). Generally, the cheapest domains are .com/net/org/etc and anything like la is more expensive and you tend to get less service (web-based), and less recognition.

It isn't bad for an L.A. area place to have though...

I found it on this page

http://www.la/pre_reg.htm

I have a lot to learn about this stuff. I am willing to trade food&beverage for a cutting edge website...I guess you would have to live in LA though.

Anyway,
Thank You for the advise

Well, you can pay the $50 for barcelona.la, its actually a nice name, and one that would be memorable...assuming it is still available. You are right, the names you get under .com are going to be less attractive. What I usually do is use the domain service at http://www.nameboy.com

http://www.nameboy.com/stepsearch.php?primary=Barcelona&secondary=Restaurant&dosearch=yes&forsale=yes&SESSION=5ea965e172171c33d87b5634d9a00486

restaurantbarcelona.com is available -- for a lot less than $50 :D.

Good luck in your hunt.

To be fair, for LA businesses, a .la domain name (for $50) is not a bad idea. But don't expect too much from these ccTLDs; e.g. ICANN has just redelegated the management of .la (see http://www.iana.org/reports/la-report-11dec02.htm). So you might want to back up your brand with a secondary domain (probably in .com).

You guys have a wealth of information to offer...

Thanks, I could not have got such great advice anywhere else.
nameboy I like the service you offer I will pick a few names and also the .la. If I have to spen the money I guess I just have to ... I know the owners will not like it but, It seems like the only choice

Meanwhile I will try to purchase barcelona.com and tapas.com

Thanks Again,

Don't think you'll ever get them, especially the former which has become the property of the Barcelona City Council after a high-profile lawsuit.

register.la can register .la domains for you

and if you have a ****register reseller account they do allow .la registrations

Salam,

I did try them already but they did not respond. I even sent them several emails and still no reply.

Thanks(Shukran)!
