Greeting, unlike most of you Im not a hosting server or for that matter a server at all. Im however, interested in selfhosting myself.
That said I have no idea where to go and what to do on this issue. I do have the following: a dedicated machine, a static IP and a 3 GIG broadband backage.
So Im looking for a beginning point. If I want to be a self server where should I go to get the basic information. NOT the server software, but the general background information.
System requirements, package types, etc, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

First, does you broadband connection permit web hosting? If not, then there isn't much point in going further. If so...
I'm really not sure of what you want to know? I'm not sure what, "the basic information" or "the general background information" means. You have the machine, an IP, and the connecton, all that's really left is the server software (which is what you said you weren't interested in).
Can you explain what other information you are looking for? Is it that you already know which software you are going to use but don't know how to use it?

System requirements really depend on the kind of service you want to offer, packages are also related to that ... You could do something with that 3 GB traffic limit, but like Chicken said, do check with your ISP first. ALs post some info on your connection here, I know most (if not all) ISPs have a nice downstream (so download for you) but upstream is usually very limit ... and that's exactly what's used most on your webserver ... (f.e. mine is 256 kB/s down and only 16 kB/s up) ...
Hope this helps :)

Yes it does....thanks for the response. My provider has no problem with with selfhosting...they better not considering what they charge me....My down stream is 1.5 MB/s and I have a 1.5 MB/s, they call it a 3 Meg package. Its as far as I can go unless I want to get a T-1 and pay the price...
Mostly I was looking for a faqs, or e book that explanes what selfserve is how its done what plugins are handy and security issues on the different softwares. That type of thing...LOL

How about something along the lines of these:

I know this is sort of a old thread. But another thing you may want to consider is latency. For example ping yahoo.com you wouldn't want to host on anything that pinged over about 90ms IMHO.
