View Full Version : What Happens when I go on Vacation?
Hey,
So heres the issue. I am currently working on a project, not webhosting, but one that allows teachers to post homework and such online. Im a one-man operation. What happens when I go on vacation? Sure there are admin services out there, but I have custom scripts, unique services, and odd features that the normal admin just wouldnt know. What are my options? I have a lot of great friends, but not a single one of them has any clue how to build a website. Ive met a lot of knowledgeable people online, but none have in-depth knowledge of my services, and support related issues. So what would you do when its vacation time?
[Note: This is completely hypothetical, currently the scripts are in development, and I dont have yet a single client. Im just throwing this out there to see what others come up with]

allan,
lol. I didnt even have time to refresh before you replied. Yeah, of course I bring the laptop, but vacation is vacation, and the phone bills pile up. I travel overseas too, what could I do then?
I approached the problem as more of a "Who could admin" perspective. Lets add to this. What happens if Im in the hospital for an extended period of time? What happens then (lets pretend the hospital doesnt have internet connections)?

Obviously there are limited options -- your best bet is to consider a server management service. Many of these companies have extensive scripting experience, so they may be able to develop a package tailored specifically for your site.

Document your work. Maybe not the step-by-step instructions on how to debug or alter the scripts, but how to perform the daily tasks.
It's a pain, it's a hassle, but when you expand beyond one-person-show status, having good documentation will let you move faster with fewer mistakes. That also provides for you being in the hospital (knock on wood-like product), you taking a "mental health day", you delegating the daily work because you've grown so prosperous that you have to start choosing your fleet of limos (one for every day of the week)...
:D
You get the idea. Documentation will save you headaches.

Everything goes to hell. Matt, don't even look at a picture in a magazine of a tropical island or you're server will go down after months of solid uptime. As soon as you pack your jammies in the suitcase and head to the airport, all hell will break loose. Your server will miss you. It will show you in the only way it knows how.

LOL. Its settled then, Im dedicating my life to the Internet, no need for vacation here. Those laptop ads with a guy sitting on a beach doing "work" looked great though, maybe some other time. Chicken, I knew I could count on you, you're so darn insightful :)

Well if you're really doing that you might want to consider offering services where others can hire you to take care of their servers (when they ARE on vacation) ;)

Matt,
I'd recommend a partner of some sort, maybe indirectly.
I have someone to look after my hosting services when I'm away or such that also knows the server and my services :)
Having an extra hand is invaluable at times, choose carefully though and for the right reasons (business wise).
Just think Matt, with "The Sims Online" you can go on a magical "virtual" vaction anywhere! From the comfort of your own computer room!
Just think, you get to talk to other pasty, reclusive pastey people, and pretend your on a island somewhere, and to top it all off you get to manage your virtual stats, like bladder and food! See, isn't technology wonderful! ;-)
hehe, only kidding, though, I think good documentation on the scripts would be a start.

I've been into web hosting for almost a year now and haven't managed to take a single day off. God knows I've tried, and it's not like theres absolutely no one else taking care of my business, but every time I do I keep coming back coz I worry that something will go wrong :(

Sign of a true businessman :D. Now, if you start becoming paranoid about germs, let your fingernails grow long, and lock yourself in a hotel room in Vegas -- then you know you have gone too far.

At this point I have no time to write an autobiography. You'll have to wait till I retire ;)

Ahhh yes, of course. That's the sort of thing that no matter how you try to explain it to the wife, she'll still say... "Ummm, no." ...but honey... "No."
Wait.. Vacation and The Internet don't go together.
However, if it's a successful company and you do not want to leave it alone, here is something I would do:
1) Purchase an inexpensive, yet good laptop
2) Get a GSM phone with GPS. Therefore you can be anyhwere in the world - and be online.
3) get a phone that allows you to connect it to your cell phone.
Done deal =)

Uhh....not to burst your bubble or anything...but instead of a phone with GPS i think you meant GPRS yeah?
And why would you want a phone that allows you to connect to your cellphone? When you can just use the "phone" instead?
Maybe i'm not understanding you right here...:)
haha i need sleep.. disregard the post. "a phone that allows you to connect it to your cell phone" what the heck was i thinking. I mean to saya laptop that allows you you connect it to your cellphone (Infrared, serial, usb, etc)

I must say, i was a bit confused myself, though I'm old and feared it was some new fangled technology method of communication that us older folk just wouldn't understand. *whew*
