View Full Version : Chicken and The Rest of The Forum
I noticed the server this forum is on has been slow, and seems to be acting up. I would be willing to give Chicken some money to help him upgrade it... would anyone else be willing to do the same?

I had some problems a few days back, but Chicken said they were performing some upgrades. I think everything is fixed now.
Sure you can give Money to Chicken.
Not really to Chicken, but I wouldn't mind giving 10-20 bucks to HHO

I'm not sure this place needs an upgraded server. I guess Chicken could answer that for sure. Maybe in the future that would be needed but that's something that would probably fall in line with being paid for by sponsors/advertising. As far as donating to the cause, that wouldn't be a problem but again, I don't think it's necessary at the moment. :)
I would be willing to donate money to advertising if Chicken would like that... just tell me if you want a little piece of my wallet Chicken... :)

:D Well, it's been fast for me, but you might be going through a bad connection route. Donations are always appreciated (maybe I should put up a link), however I don't think you can really raise enough for donations. I'll probably start accepting advertising in order to build up a healthy reserve for the forum. Down the line I may need to pay someone to help with the database (I already have someone in mind), do some programming, pay others for time spent here, buy a cluster of servers, etc.
Of course there are many nice folks who help keep the costs down (such as the moderators and fastservers.net, as well as the many others who offer to help), but having a reserve of $5K sitting in an account in case it's needed probably wouldn't hurt either.
count me in for a few bucks as well. and buying a banner spot:)

I think I missed this post before (or at least when I re-read it, it sure didn't seem familiar.
Summing up, at the current moment, with the recent fixes, server is doing good. It is nearly the only thing running on the server (a few other small sites), and even though it's not a powerhouse, it is doing the job (currently).
As I mentioned, I will use advertising in the future to build up a reserve in case of disasters and future needs. My primary goal is to provide a resource for the hosting community. This will be expanded (soon... but I always say, "soon").

A post was made above that said that we should donate to HHO so this site could be run on a better server. Here's the quote specifically...

...I was just saying that sure we can donate but I didn't think a new server was needed, yet! I'm still sending you my payment, Chicken. Don't cancel me just yet, please Mr. Chicken!

HHO has been slow since I signed up. The slowest site I've been to in several months, discounting flash. It's not images or anything, they're all cached...I think it's the mySQL database. Anyhow, I find it really slow. I'm on Verizon dialup.

Unless you mean routing problems I don't see how. It is, as I said, the slowest site I've been to/visited in several months, all the other major forums I visit (FWS, WHT) are much faster.

Well, all three forums are in different datacenters, different providers. Can you post a trace route to the forum and maybe it will help expllin the sluggishness. I don't think it's the mySQL database, I think it's your route, but I'm not sure.
I think ever since I started here 2 weeks ago (even though I been signed up longer) I am logged on and active more then anyone... I would'nt say HHO is the slowest, I think its just as fast as WHT. I have had slow moments, but its back to its normal fast speed for me at least...

It gets pretty slow after it gets out of my ISP (hop 7). But then of course it times out.

I just ran a tracert from dnsstuff.com to see what it showed there. It seemed fast but the last hop (#27) seems odd. Could be a problem on their end, though...
