I know WHT does this... why not start a member of the month? get the community involved... just an idea.

I think someone suggested this a long time ago, but I wanted to try to have something a bit more organized, less random, and with less problems. Maybe random, heh.
Hmm... I am not really sure how WHT goes about doing this, I think I saw them do it like this.. but what if..
Let's use January as an example:
You would take the top 10 posters of January, and then you make a thread with a voting poll. And the whole month of Febuary people can vote who they want to be the member of the month. And maybe as the reward they can have a special title, or something.
I am not sure if thats how WHT does it.. but I think that may be away to go about it... tell me what you think.

I know I am digging up an older thread, but...
If you go by post count you will get more useless posts because people want the title. I don't think HHO is going for that.
So far HHO has provided me with the quality of posts I was looking for at the other place but just got tired of searching for the posts so I came here.

But then you run back into the first delema; how do you nominate someone? You have to have a voting process or a way to decide who gets nominated. It's a catch-22 situation.

That'll work. However some people would still get upset that they weren't chosen.
This is too complicated for such a simple hypothetical task (seeing that it probably wont ever happen here.). Maybe it should just be completely random with no intervention from any one.
But then it may select people who don't come here often. ahhh!!!

No offense to anyone that likes this idea but I would suggest that HHO doesn't go this route. It's not a huge problem if this is started and with all due respect to those that run this at WHT, this is WHT's deal. I would rather see something unique here that was created by those at HHO instead of just a copy of something from another forum. Plus, like xerocity stated, a ton of issues could arise in just the nominations portion let alone voting.
I don't mind something along the lines of this idea but make it unique and make it something that HHO started. Again, just my opinion, take it for what it's worth! :)

This is exactly what I meant before. I currently have 42 posts (43 including this one.). Because I am so close I may decide to just post 7 more pretty useless posts, just so that I am eligible. Does that make me worthy of being in the contest? I don't think so.
there will always be complaints... but i think a member of the year should have more then 50 post IMO

Here was what I was thinking...
I pick a random registered user with 50+ posts (done by a script), and then place a message for 24 hours, only to them (only they would be able to see the message via a board hack), and if they respond (via email or PM), they win a prize. Maybe something board related at first (I don't know... an ad or something), but also things like t-shirts and maybe even a server.
I think I may have broken the board hack though, I had it working once.

Another thought -- about prizes -- is possibly have people from this forum donate a prize. Something like a t-shirt like you suggested Chicken but with their logo. It's a good way to relieve the hassle of you having to get the prize all the time plus is a nice advertising promo for that company. You would probably want some rules about what could be donated but I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad...

Nice, but I also like the free advertising on HHO, which no one except for Chicken can donate. Maybe both? :D
I dont know what the answer is but I like the idea :D

I am a fan of Chicken idea too
there is a group (Karen will know ) where the first person to post on the board (they use the ollllld MB from matts script archive) gets a graphic put on the board with them or a cartoon of them wearing a "melmac Crown" maybe we could do something like that but with the persons pic in an egg :D

why not do this..
have small prizes that you hide for peopole.. aka the egg idea, then maybe monthly have a big prize and have that person see what i see.. if you give me a sec i screeen snap it so everyone else can see what i see

I agree that Member of the year is WAY to infrequent. We'd all forget after one vote lol!
Member of the quarter is probably the max you could go, even that is too long imo!

Yep, I second that. But it would help to bring the community together as every would get involved.
I think rewarding good memebers is a good thing, and can attrack people into striving to be the best they can. I think something in the lines of member of the whatever would be a good thing. I do love Chicken's idea, but yet I think the memeber of whatever could be benfiting
