Some of you might see this post as thinly disguised spam but I assure you, I genuinely want some feedback on this issue.

I registered sneer.net a couple of weeks ago and put it on ebay, start bid $19.95. There were no bids in the first couple of days and I wanted a quick turn around so I put a “buy now” price on it of $39.95 and after 5 days, still nothing.

Granted, it isn’t a .com and you personally might not like the name but there is no denying that it is a rare 5-letter dictionary singular noun. How often can you register these? You see dictionary domains ending in “s”, “ed” and “ing” quite often but a singular noun for $39.95! Anyway, I pulled the auction. There is nothing wrong with a bargain, but I was crazy to list it for that price.

I used to make a small but reasonable secondary income reselling domains but gave it up for other interests. I have just started to get involved again. I realise that the domain game isn’t what it was in the late 90s, but my question(s) to you resellers with current knowledge is…

What on earth is going on? Has the domain world gone mad or is it me that has lost the plot?

Thanks

You did the right thing by posting it in the ad forums if you even thought it might be construed as, "thinly disguised spam" -but I feel that you really do, "genuinely want some feedback on this issue" and have moved it to the main domain forum.

If it helps you advertise it, it's not only a 5-letter dictionary singular noun, but it's also a 5-letter dictionary singular verb. It's a nice domain (even being a .net) and I don't see why it shouldn't sell.

I kind of like the domain. It would make for a great blog site.

I honestly can't speak of the reliability of it exactly (as I'm not a customer), but one of our moderators specializes in this type of hosting. Check out Living Media's (http://hosthideout.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=86) http://www.scribehost.com.

For software, I'd just check:
http://www.movabletype.org/
http://www.noahgrey.com/greysoft/
http://www.livejournal.com/
http://www.postnuke.com/

(some of these are a bit above and beyond a simple blog script)

You also might want to wait until you choose a host, as hosts like Lesli (Living Media) may offer some type of software included with the account.
