w00t! The computer swap meet!!!

Okay, I had heard about this computer swap meet which happens the last Saturday each month near my house, but I've never gone. With the passing of the wife's laptop (the hdd died *sniff*), I decided to check it out.

I found a box of 6GB laptop hdd's, $5 ea. so I got a couple of those.

I can't find my damn digi-cam's cable so I looked for a Compact Flash card reader (found for $10).

Assuming I could get the laptop up and working with the hdd I bought, I would need another wireless network card (found for $25).

And the new laptop I bought does not have a PS2 mouse port (!!!) so I went looking for a USB mouse and found one for $2 (but it is of the "balled" variety, the optical one was $10, probably should have gotten that one).

Ohhh, and I got the wife one of those clip on thumb trackball mice thingies which work really great with laptops for $2.

Those shows are dangerous though... need to keep focused on what you need and stay away from things you want.

A computer store by my place had a sale and I got a 30GB HD for $5 today; they said it was bad and had bad sectors. I went to the Western Digital site and got the Diagnostic tool then checked if the HD was all good it didn't seem to have any errors so I used the low level format thing in the diagnostic tool then I used Fdisk and did another low level format and now it's in my comp running fine. They wanted $10 for it but I talked them down to $5. I also got a 10GB HD for $2, and it works great as well. :D

Nice -- I have the same problem at the "Computer Show and Sale" they have here locally. I had to stop going -- of course now I just buy all my stuff off ebay :(.

Haha, well, here's my specs you tell me if I need stuff :D

- 300 mhz
- 256mb ram
- 4mb video
- 64mb sound (yeah well I just got that)
- 5.6 GIG hd

I have tried to buy a new one for ages but everyone I order I get a bad part or two :(

if you happon to find like a P3 chip and bord let me know price and ill paypal you i need to upgrade my system only a P2 400 right now.

ohh and maby one or two drives 20-60 gig range.

You know, Fry's had some processor and mobo combinations that seemed pretty reasonable in last week's ad. One P4 and a cheaper AMD combo. Also, in some cases, you might do either better or about the same with 60GB drives by looking at places like BestBuy or CompUSA and rebates. At least you'd have a warranty then. Spending $5 on a 6GB drive is one thing, but risking $50 is another. If yo're a gamblin' man, I'll be yor dealer though... :D

shure if you happon to see somthing just let me know ive checked at the local super computer sale that goes on once a month, but they did have what i was looking for.

yea i might go the route of bestbuy for a hd or do some more checking online for a good price.

it just kinda blows just haveing a total of 16 gig between two hard drives right now:)

I know the feeling, as I have a 9GB (1/2 full) and a 20GB (3/4 full), and I'm needing more space. I personally don't think I'd buy a hdd for this computer at the swap meet (though I'll look for both of us and see what I can find). I've had new drives fail, and as I mentioned, the swap meet drives come as is, which means possibly dead. :(
