I'm a big Dell fan. I love the PowerEdge servers, especially with the embedded remote access.
I do wonder though, what other hardware exists that is on the of the same calibur for entering machine remotely? I don't mean software like PC Anywhere, but gaining direct console access. What do the folks as HP or IBM provide? How about other server builders?
And further, what types of remote access devices are you folks utilizing, specifically KVM over IP?

We use their port authority and they work really well.
I've used Compaq DL-320/360/380's with their "RLO" (Remote Lights Out) cards which are pretty neat. Basically, you can telnet into an IP to get console on the machine, or you can access the machine via a web browser. It's great for installing OS's, rebooting the machine if it has hung, etc. For remote administration, I'd highly recommend it!

Imagine having the same control over IP. You could then access your servers console directly over the internet or VPN.

What is it called? Dell Remote Access Card? Is it KVM Over IP or just redirected serial console?

I have tried Belkin Omniview Enterprise KVM Over IP. Can't really recommend the product since the device failed after a week of light use :)

Dell has management software called OpenManager which is SMTP based management with asset management, early warnings, etc.
The Dell Remote Access Card (DRAC) gives you remote access to a machine even when it is turned off over IP or modem. The Dell ERA and ERA/O (for 1655MC's) are essentially the same as the DRAC but embedded in the servers and without a modem.
Basically, you can gain access to the server in any state, view the console (even graphically if running windows), turn it off, turn it on, and perhaps the most interesting: You can boot the server to a floppy in your local machine. It's just every admins dream.
We have a few older Dell's that don't have this though, and now that I've used it I want access to all my servers remotely. :)

SMTP or SNMP?

Doh, yeah SNMP!
Too many bloody acronyms. You'd think after years of playing with OpenView, CA Unicenter and Tivoli I'd have that one down by now.

If you are looking for a solution that isn't "built in" or proprietary, I've had great success with products from Cyclades.
Their remote console products are solid: http://www.cyclades.com/products/?id=2
