Forigve me if this question has been redundant throughout these forums. I tried to search, and didn't turn up anything useful..

Where can I find a list of hosting directories? And what are some good ones that you personally have had good returns on?

Thanks,

Chicken

Oddly, there was a thread (#155), but it's somehow vanished. Hmmm... I even have it bookmarked, plus there was a spam post submitted to the thread which was removed (and is now in the trash can). The notes on that say it was split from the thread that is no more.

Try here: Yahoo - Web Hosting Directories (http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Internet_and_World_Wide_Web/Network_Service_Providers/Hosting/Web_Site_Hosting/Directories/)

I personally recommend ISPCheck.com http://www.ispcheck.com Its a bid for position system, but you can easily get on the first page of results in each category for 0.40 or so cents. #1-3 runs around $1.70 - 2.20 depending on the category. My first campaign i got 3 customers out of 10 high bid clicks, which is not that bad :)

Also, check out http://findmyhosting.com they require $30 deposit for listing in the search results, and they take a small commission per sale that they refer. Its not that expensive for advertising wise, but you compete with a lot of low low budget companys.

Has anyone ever heard of HostSearch.COM or WebHostingMall.COM? I like their search features and it's easy to get in their showcases.

Anywho, the object of this entire thread was to find the site that has a huge list of the directories. It wasn't a yahoo or portal site, it was just a big list some guy had compiled.

If I run in to it, I'll be sure to let you guys know. In the mean time, please keep the list of directories coming. I appreciate all the help I can get..

Thanks,

I used some of these directories back when I started hosting. I never found that I received much as a result. I assume that if you pay for a ad spot you might have a better result.

Then I switch my time into maintaining my current clients and the results were much better. It takes a lot of time to submit to all these directories.

Yeah, well I have just started out in the last week, and those directories that you pay for are pointless to me, unless there is one, I find that the host use them to check out competition. I paid $2.60 PC to get the top spot on one for a week. The page my add was on was viewed some 20,000 times, and they on clicked on my link (the first one) like 10 times or something.

If there is trully a directory that your regular old joes use, to find webhosting I would use it, but there is just a bunch of directories, I don't think they do much good.

Generally posting one's own links is frowned upon *ahem* however I've turned this into [LIST 2] as the other one is still MIA, and your can be added. There is a system to the madness, but only I know it so don't worry... ;) :D

I would say I have got maybe 3 clients at the absolute most from these directories out of the 74 clients I currently have. I have joined just about every directory - and the time I spent submitting my site could have been better spent doing other things. What I'm looking fo rnow are alternate ways to advertise without spending too much. Any ideas?

I have a local publication which gives me about 5 new clients a month. These clients always seem to purchase multiple plans after another month or so, I think they are mainly website developers etc.

The rest of my clients are currently coming from the internet. Mainly forums and some from search engines.

What other methods do people use that actually work? I've been thinking about going around business districts etc and finding meeting points and putting up advertisements on notice boards etc? Or even in Universities? Business Centres?

Do people directly contact businesses offering their services at all? How succesful is that?

How about other places on the internet to generate some more traffic. Do written reviews help? Where are the best places on the internet to submit articles and reviews etc, from your own clients?

Also I have registered the domain
http://www.hostspotter.com
I am thinking of making my own directory site, anyone interested in being involved in its development? I'll probably offer free adds for the first month or so.

I don't think you're exactly "selling the idea" below ;) -but in any case, feel free to post a request in the Ad Space/Listings For Sale or FREE (http://hosthideout.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=63) advertising forum. :D

Hehee.......Well I'm Not looking at it as a serious business thing, just a cheaper way to help promotion. I'm sure directories are usefull if you have front page prime advertisement positions. But I can't afford this - all my listings are Free ones - so not surprising they are useless.
Also I might be able to make a few dollars out of IPowerweb , since they seem to advertise on everything and anything. :)

Along with ispcheck I can also vouch for ppc4host.com I have seen some ok results from them also though when I first started with them you could get #1 slot for about .13 cents a click and it has gone way up since then.

I can however tell you I did a campaign at WHT which had about 33k top banners and 300k bottom banners and I saw basically no return from it at all, this has also happened at a few other places so I try to stick with the ppc ads as much as possibleand not burn through everything so quick..

<edit>my wht campaign was for 30 days which is nothing compared to the overall amount of hits WHT gets but you would still expect some type of return or atleast I did/<edit>

Thanks, I took a guess and tried that. Only thing I find strange is that it doesn't appear to be listed in any search engines. Not sure how average people find it.

I'm sorry but I got to say that I hate these directories that pop up here and there without actual content and are used only to promote someones company or gain high ranking in google just because of some other succesful site is linking to them which is owned by the same person/company.

There are only a few quality directories out there in my opinon, everything else is just replicas and wanna bes'..

That's my opinion anyway..

bveditz
11-05-03, 10:17 AM
True, but that doesn't stop people from using those directories. I've seen quite a few directories with very few ads/posts that are promoted by companies with 10,000+ users. While they may not be great, the percentage of people looking at your ad/post will probably be greater then it will at the large directories. Plus, the competition will be lower. No matter how small the site, people still visit there and why not be the only 'competition in town' there?

I will admit that for some reason, and I honestly don't know why, hosting directories owned by hosts for teh primary purpose of promoting their company also annoy me as well. As I said, I don't know why, it's good marketing I'm sure and maybe they even help people find hosts (and help hosts who get business from it). It just bugs me.

Actual content is one way to separate yourself from those, though FindSP has always been a good directory IMHO, maybe not exactly what I'd do, but solid regardless. (And they have a good forum! ;) :D)

Some directories also try a bit too hard to be a bit of everything. Content is so-so, the backend is so-so, and they have add-ons like forums which are poorly maintained and/or barely traveled. Running a forum is *not* easy (I hope I have enough experience to calim that). Maintaining a directory is hard enough, but add to that content and forums, and advertisers and it's no wonder many of them are only so-so all around. It's too much sometimes.
