View Full Version : Urgent Computer Help Please :)
Hello,
Somehow my WindowsXP computer switched from its normal resolution (800x600) to some ungodly number, Im assuming the highest value. At this resolution I am unable to read nothing on the screen. After hours of trying I am still unable to get it back to normal resolution, meaning at this point the computer is useless. Prior to the XP login screen the resolution is fine. I am unable to find a resolution setting when going into the information located in the bootup screen. Any assistance is appreciated.

I guess this in short was a wakeup call to get off such an unusable resolution. Im on a 17 inch Gateway Flat Screen and am currently set at 1280*1024. If you know your way around a computer, You can quickly get into Netmeeting where you can allow me control of the desktop to switch it back, use magnifier, and go to 'System restore', or get a bigger monitor.
I don't know if this will help you:
Right Click on the desktop
Properties is the bottom option, click that (or press down 7 times then enter)
Click the last 'tab' - Settings (or shift-tab then right arrow 4 times)
In the bottom left hand corner is a slider you want to slide it left. If you've used keys up to this point press tab then the left arrow a bunch of times, then enter.
Hopefully that will get you back to a decent resolution
Or boot into safe mode and change the resolution.

I'm not sure if Windows XP has this as well but modify the system.ini file in Windows. There may be a line that reads "display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv" which is for the monitor settings. Change that to read "display.drv=vga.drv". I know this existed in previous versions of Windows but I am not on a XP machine at the moment to test this or not. This would basically set the display properties back to the basic settings so after getting back into Windows, you would then just need to modify them to the correct setting.
Also, using 800x600 was the resolution of choice for me until moving to a 19" monitor. Even now, I'm at 1024x768 and couldn't imagine going any higher.
I'm at 1152 resolution on my 18" LCD and if I went any higher, i would need bottle cap glasses!
Fixed! Thanks for all your help. I tried the above suggestions without success. Then I called Dell and they helped me restore the computer back a few days. Worked like a charm. Also, its not as if I had chosen the higher setting, I was in RoboDemo and all of a sudden it just changed. I wonder if Vito is behind this ;)
