I work for a school district and use an N2H2 Bess proxy server to prevent student from accessing "inappropriate web sites" (our technology funding is linked to our use of a web url filter server).
After I brought the Bess server online I created an access-list on our Cisco 6509 layer 3 switch forcing all http & https requests through the Bess filter server.
Recently, I eliminated the Bess server and removed the access-list from the 6509 layer 3 switch.
Even though the access-list has been removed I am unable to access the Internet unless I start the Bess filter server and enter the filter server's address in the proxy settings of the browser.
It is as though the "deleted" access-list is still forcing all URL requests through the Bess filter server.
I have spent a day and a half trying pinpoint the cause of this problem --- any help would be greatly appreciated.
