Intel Woodcrest Processor

I know that Intel was trying to compete with AMD Opterons and the XEONs were not holding their ground. "XEONs relied on their clock speeds to to make up for their clock to clock performance, but at the price of using more power and in turn creating more heat." Quoted off "Tech Report".

Due to this Intel has released a new code name "Woodcrest microprocssor". Does anyone know which exact chip model this refers to? Can anyone shed some light on this topic?

I believe the woodcrest is the 5130 as we are going to be purchasing a few. we heard its a exceptional processor.

It says that the whole 5100 series was code named the woodcrest. We have actually been using it for some time now in many of our servers that we build. It is a great processor. To my knowledge we haven't gotten any complaints about them thus far.

Hi we opted for a few the line of servers with a single processer dual core xeon 3.0ghz (2x 2mb cache) in, we may take a chance on the woodcrest later on but for now we want to see how the server we purchased performs.

Thanks for the info though, as I never knew the entire 5100 series was nicknamed woodcrest.

If you don't mind me asking, what manufacturer are you buying your servers from or do you build them yourself? I'm not sure if you are aware, but the company I work for actually is a server manufacturer as well. You can check us out at www.RackLogic.com. Maybe if you like to keep your options open you can compare us to your current vendor the next time you are in the market.

No, I was not aware but am now :) thanks. I purchased a few from softlayer, I also have a few located at theplanet. I actually hit on a stroke of luck, we where going to go with another company however they never got back to us even though a week has been and gone since we contacted them, then I came across softlayer and did not know at the time of purchasing the servers they are run by the same guys who started theplanet.

That is actually a pretty sweet deal you have going on for you. Maybe that is why I have tried marketing to theplanet before and they shot me down. We have the same thing going on with our sister hosting company, and our colo company.

We are loving the new Woodcrest CPUs. They run much cooler and are much more power efficient than the old Xeons... not to mention they outperform them by a large degree.

The woodcrests are the 5100 series, with 4MBs of cache, shared.

The Dempsey series are 5000 series, and it's a 2MB of cache per core.

They are all 65nm fabrication and dual core.

We use the dempseys a lot because you can get them now at a great price. Newegg sells the 3Ghz version for only $199.99. A +/- 3.0Ghz Woodcrest is around $750 or so. The woodcreat is higher performance, but not to justify 3 times the price, yet. They are new in the market and built in lower volume, and that is why their price is still so high.

We use a lot of Woodcrests and may be switching at some point, at least away from Supermicro. Hardware failure rates seem to be a bit high for such expensive machines!

Woodcrest is great, but make sure its running on reliable hardware :)

A woodcrest 5130 is like $250-$350/each, hate to loose it due to bad hardware.

I have four SuperMicro servers running on Dual Woodcrest 5130, Very happy with performance.

The woodcrests are worth the money we have been offering them as upgrades on our Dell PE1955s and our clients have been happy.
