Group,

I have a decision to make and would like to get everyones opinion who has experience dealing with different manufactures memory.

I have a Hewlett Packard DL Series server and I am looking to add more memory to it, I found that I can get Kingston memory for half the cost of authentic HP memory.

My question is will I have or run into any problems or issues using Kingston memory in my HP server? I beleive in trying to stick with the manufactures products that I am dealing with since I feel it was designed to work with the server, but heck I can get 4 GB of Kingston memory for the same price that 2 GB of HP memory would cost. I want the better deal but I dont want the headaches of missmatching or incompatability and etc.

Is there anyone who can shed some detailed light on this subject to help me make a better informed decision on wheather I should buy the Authentic HP memory or buy the Kingston memory and what problems if any I might encounter?

Also both mfg memory would be bought brand new regardless of which one I bought.

Thanks for your help.

Doug

I personally buy the least expensive (Crucial, Kingston, etc. they are all brand names). I am not sure how many places make it, but as with writable DVD-R's, there's only so many places that make it, and everyone else slaps their own brand on it and sells it.

If that is the case Chicken.... Does anyone here know who makes the memory for HP Servers such as the DL 380's and DL 360's ?

Thanks

Unless the chip states a specific manufacturer, then you probably won't be able to find out. I don't know myself as well but I wouldn't be surprised if it is a company like those mentioned by Chicken. And as for myself, I also usually purchase the least expensive memory as long as the name on the chip isn't some off-the-wall place.

Mark & Chicken,

Thank you for your help on this. If I get time ill have to take a look at the chip thats in there and see what it says on it.

I think I will probably be buying the Kingston memory to save me alot of money but well see...

Crucial.com allows you to search for compatible memory for servers on their site, including HP. They are probably a bit more expensive direct than buying through Newegg, but it takes some of the worry out of wondering if the RAM will be compatible.

Kingstone is a good memory and you can save a valve not being afraid to lose stability. But remember, that it is better to replace DDR memory modules in pairs. As good brand name making memory is Patriot.

Hello i work in a computer store and unless we are building a gaming machine for overclocking, we only use Kingston memory, i also do server hosting and building servers and only use Kingston memory i have to say it works in almost every kind of server or computer just fine.

Be aware that memory chips are actually manufactured by a handful of companies. In the US, Crucial manufactures their chipsets. Everywhere else, it's mostly Samsung and a few other companies.

We use Viking, Kingston and Crucial brands. We use them on generic servers, Supermicros and Dells. No problems whatsoever.

Kingston FB-DIMM modules for the newer Xeon chipsets are excellent. Even a Quad Xeon Mac will take them with no problems whatsoever.

I believe Crucial supplies HP with most of their RAM. My understanding, however, is that it's kind of hit-and-miss with compatibility... sometimes it'll work, sometimes not. For a more thorough answer, I would either google it, or just call HP. Especially if you're an HP partner, you might be able to get some really helpful information on that. Heck, even Crucial might be able to shed a little light on it!

I would personally recommend KIGSTON
They are giving lifetime warranties with some of the RAMS
with DDR too.
