There's lots of debate over directories in SEO.. but one thing most people agree on is that for the most part pagerank is worthless. You'll probably be best suited to seek out the hosting niche directories (there's a lot of them) - that adds relevency to your links (and are more likely to give you direct traffic).
Another good one is www.google.com

I am still of the opinion there is nothing to help a site more than content. Most of the link shares are more like email address whores and with the time involved, you are almost better off just paying for good links. It should be a part of a "real" SEO strategy these days. My 2 cents

Hi All,
There's a big list of directories sorted by page strength factors as defined by SEOmoz here - Strongest Directories (http://www.avivadirectory.com/strongest-directories/)
They're then listed accordingly including details of whether they're free to submit to, only accept recip links, or how much sponsored listings cost etc.
Not entirely sure whether I agree with the earlier comment of directories being nothing more than email 'whores'.
I definately treat the title section on submitting to directories as reading 'keyword'. As long as it doesn't read too spammy it'll generally get passed by the directory owners.
This will then help back up natural SEO work, as you'll get the directory linking back to you using the title (read keyword) as anchor text.
This obviously doesn't take away from any 'on page' factors that are needed to ensure a site performs well in natural SEO, but goes a long way towards improving those all important 'off page' factors.
Just my two-penneth anyways...

Here's another link of around 6,000+ directories
http://typelife.blogspot.com/2007/02/list-of-6812-seo-friendly-directories.html
Aparently they are all seo friendly by looking at the url.
I have not started promoting on them or tested any of the directories so I don't quite know how good the list is yet.
