depends on the kind of people who visit your site... if they are the type to buy hosting then it is a great price, if it is a site that people who don’t need hosting visit then no, not so great
what kind of site do you run and where on the page is the banner located?

I don't really know if it's a good price or not as I mainly use free advertising. But I know that forums don't do as well as other types of sites when it comes to convertising ad impressions to clicks.
I think the $5/month is reasonable. In fact, those are the kinds of ads we take out - I have no interest in the $2800 per day ads that all those web hosting directories try to sell! (From what I've heard, those are not very effective.)

Sometimes you see an estimated amount of traffic that other sites have been average in their advertising so you can then work out roughly how much you are likely to pay per visitor.
Whenever I do this I always work out how much I am likely to pay per visitor then I normally double it. If it still looks good then I will go and advertise with them.
I do this because so I can make a little profit with it plus most of the time I never get as much traffic as what they say you may get.
That's what I find anyway with things like Adbrite and Adengage.
I have also heard that adbrite.com is worth using to start for a few months or so. Then once people get some sales from you... it will sell itself from there :)

I have had a little success on advertising with these two, but as you don't pay per click and you pay per month for advertising no matter how much visitors you get from a site, I still think it is a little harse when a site goes down. For example, I have used adbrite a few times and I have had no problems. I have then used adengage and their site went down a few times during my advertising and they didn't even email me saying that it had gone down. It had lost me about 5% of my advertising money as I could have got about 5% more traffic for what I had paid for.
That things you have to especially watch with adengage.

I think you're selling yourself short at $5/month, IMHO.
