What is the difference between an AMD Sempron/Celeron/Athlon chip and a Pentium4?
Is the P4 3.0 ghz chip same/better/worse than the AMD Athlon 3000?
Is the ghz the over riding factor?

The Semperon is the replacement in the AMD line of the older Duron processor and is targeted at competing with the Celeron for the low-end desktop market. It lacks the cache and some of the memory managemetn found in higher end chips such as the Athlon and Pentium.
The P4/3G and AthlonXP/3G are about equivalent. In some applications the AMD performs better in other the P4 does. In a server I doubt you would notice much difference, except in price.
Any processor can be used for any purpose (pretty much) and the main difference will be performance. WHat one then has to decide is the price/performance value point you want to hit and shop accordingly.
There is more to selecting a system than just the processor speed. The buss speeds, memory controller and type of supported memory and similar considerations all play a part.

They'd be about equal. It really depends on what the machine is doing.

excluding the Sempron,
for one you cant compare AMD and Intels clock speed as a source for a decision,
from experiance iv always used AMD Opteron cpus..they run, run, run AND run
no issues.
hope this helps you some.

buy amd if you want better performance. buy intel if you want your friends too look you as rich. AMD is better. but if you have money go with the quadcore intel. amd quadcore will be release by mid june i think. not sure.

Intel gets my vote :) Never had any problems with them.

AMD or Intel

AMD did have better performance in the previous generation of CPUs, but with the new Xeon Woodcrest and Core 2 Duos, Intel has pushed ahead in performance for now.

I second this... AMD Opteron based servers rock!

dual core seems to be very popular now ...

I agree as well, that why I love my dual opteron server :P

Dual core is a must have (Intel or AMD, but I prefer Intel).

I also feel that dual core is better to get. I also like intel better than amd I have used both and feel that better performance comes from intel.

AMD is cheaper but other than that there is no real difference,

I do agree with this part, as of current I have a dual opteron server, But I might be moving on with Woodcrest or Core 2 Duos to compare the performances.

AMD own Intel any day, work faster, lower temperatures and generally I love AMD, but, I do have 3 intel servers.
Forums tend to run better on Intels I think, but general other sites on AMD :)
