View Full Version : How to be legally registerd
Hello all,
I am thinking of going into the reseller trade, yet I'm curious. I own a dedicated server in America - And am located in the UK.
Profits would be low for the initial months, and will be more of a part time thing (I have a 9-5 job) with hired staff to assist. Nothing big and bad, from reading these forums many would describe it as a "kiddy business" - However I do have large and finaincally backed plans.
Would anybody from the UK have any advice of how to be registerd, and what the tax implementations are? If i run it as a sole trader, do i need to register? If so, where?
Thanks in advance.

:offtopic: I don't think anyone would describe what you plan to do as a "kiddie business". You want to resell services part-time and may grow it into more eventually. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.
I'll let someone from the UK handle your actual question...

Nice description, pritty much sums it up
Truthfully, your best bet is to contact a CPA in your area. Or, if your local government has a "how to get started in business" seminar, you may want to contact them.
Get in touch with the Inland Revenue and have a look around their site: http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk
Even though many think of them as a scary bunch they have a lot of good info and many leaflets, packs and other literature that you get when registered.
If starting up as a sole trader, you are just required to register for the tax issues and NI and generally tell them what you're doing. There will probably be some details to sort out assiciated with your other job to do with tax & NI too.
When registered they send you a big pack of guides etc to give you a helping hand and you also get thier Newly Self Employed Helpline which can sometimes be pretty helpful.
Their number is 08459 15 45 15 and I'm sure they'll answer any of your questions.
Hope this helps :)
I remember Jon of jbserve.com having to jump through a lot of hoops to get legal that we don't have to in the USA. You might check with him and see if he can give you any advice.

I agree with allan  ... if you are new to business, certainly visit a certified accountant for advice.. unless you want to spend a great deal of time researching, this is the only safe way to cover all the bases.
I know this is an old topic but you may want to look at http://www.businesslink.org for UK business info.
