Actually i want to buy my own server
Then it can cost from $400 - $10,000

how these webhosting companies set up servers to sell hosting space
They build there own Data Center Facility building or purchase a Colo Suite / Cage.

If you are going to run it from your home you will need alot of bandwidth and high speed.

And regarding the sms gateway script ...where can i get it ....should i attach some gsm modem to it ......or anything like that....

And where can i get the accredited sms gateway

It's not a script you have to pay just to be credited I think... then you have to pay for someone to make a script for you.

This is because SMS Gateway providers have hired programmers to program it for them.

If you were to host the server on your own bandwidth or colocation, you're paying significantly more than simply just ordering from a dedicated server provider or leasing out from someone.

Many hosts resell. They simply buy hosting from someone, use their reseller account to base accounts off of.

The base host will get a server from a dedicated server provider.

That dedicated server provider either resells for someone who has space at a colo site, or OWNS the colo site.

The colocation space is either rented, or owned by a company.

...... many many many layers as you can see. Like I said, spare yourself a few bucks and do it the easy way.

Colocation will save you money in the long run if you're hosting several servers, but not if you're just hosting one server. There are several dedicated hosting companies out there, run a search, find a good one.

Remember the added costs of colocation:

1. Rackspace itself
2. Bandwidth is to be bought separately
3. You might want to buy a KVM or RRP for remote administration
4. Hands on support is as high as $100 / hour on good datacenters and even more in some cases
5. Your hardware parts wont really have a guarantee aside from what the manufacturer has provided, which means- if something on your server breaks you need to send it back. What about immediate replacement? Since you wont have parts on hand you need to send back the faulty part and wait for a replacement. Do you stay down during this time?

If you take a dedicated server, all this is taken care of and bundled at one low monthly fee. Your server fails, your webhost will replace it, they'll also offer backup services and what not at an affordable price.

Even in the very very long run, your colocation simply wont pay off.

This is a very good point. Unless you own multiple servers, I would suggest just renting a server. Depending on how large your trying to make this company, you should possibly look at a VPS if your trying to save money then expand as you grow. A dedicated server is pretty expensive to just start off with.

Thats how I would look at it.

I would actually recommend renting a server rather than owning one at the beginning esp if you are planning to host it in US (when you are in India). You can't fly there to fix a hardware problem. There are alot of dedicated server deals which will fit your bill but choose wisely and not 'price'ly. Justify your cost with the best WORTH. I won't also recommend VPS due to the lack of power as a SMS gateway server.
This is the technical part of my post.

As this follows under the business discussion, I would also look into your proposal in the business sense. From your post, it seems to me that you are not very familiar with the ringtone industry (Neither do I). It might be many ppl's passion to do something great (& fun). However, I would put my advice not to plunge into an unfamiliar industry until you are ready to go.

Think through some of the following questions.
1) Are you offering the service in India? US? Asia? Global?
2) Are you technical capable? or else how you get your TEAM to manage the business?
3) Have you done your market research on number of mobile phone users, their preference, and price that they pay for their ringtone, competitors?

Sorry for the second bit but I think business looks from different perspectives.

Actually, I'd always start off with quality shared hosting. Renting any sort of dedicated server without good management is insane, and expensive. With good management it will be even more expensive. Make sure your hosting provider does backups and has good uptime and can answer technical questions.

You should be able to just use clickatell.com or something similar for sending the SMSes.
