William, although you might get PM's from this post, we have an Other Hosting Related Offers (http://www.hosthideout.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21) in which you may post in and people can ask questions.

WebHostingTalk is a good one as well, I've sold a few companies and bought some there. SitePoint Sell Your Site might be good too. Both are pretty watched, here and maybe dnforums.com too. Best way is to post on all the boards at same time and track all requests for info.

If you are very large there are people you can hire that will sell it for you.

I have been thinking about this recently (but as a potential buyer).
I was trying to work out a formula to value a servers worth of customers.
One of the main issues was:

Do you run the DNS on the same box as the customers?
Are you selling the domain the name servers are based on along with the customers?

Without the name server host names coming as part of the deal all the customers sites will go down or you will lose half the customers because they can't update the name servers at the registry.
Therefore I was goiung to value customers at 2x if the name server names were coming with them.

Worth thinking about when you are trying to sell!

Seems buying customers is very common way of growing, gordan do you get more customers from normal growth or from acquisitions?

We get our new customers from advertising and word of mouth (about 50/50).
Acquiring other businesses is cheaper though.
I need to find the time to work out a simple buying formula for buying out people who have one or two servers.
If I could streamline the process it would make the prospect less stressful.
I would worry about losing customers and messing up their sites during the move.
I think DNS is the biggest issue.

Ok, sorry, I really thought you were joking. But anyway, when someone refers to selling clients, they are talking about selling each revenue source, and not the person themself.

I am no longer looking to seel them off. I have gotten many request to buy only certain customers and all of that. Anyways I appriciate all the pms and such in regards to this.

As far as it being illegal to sell clients. Its not, its done in many industries. Especially the hosting industry. Some larger hosts want to purchase the customers. Also Banks do this with home loans. They will sell them off to other banks and lenders. Anyways I just wanted to post a comment back about this concern that was raised.

You may wish to contact a broker, who has a large base of potential "buyers" and can stipulate the terms of your sale. Using a broker can assist you in facilitating a qualified list of buyers, terms, valuation of your company against current market rates, assist with legal matters (or helping you get in touch with a lawyer) escrow services, and sale completion.

I've seen a lot of *handshake* deals go sour, so might as well lose a few % points to someone who specializes in these things, than risk it yourself.

Just a thought....if you have a large number of clients and a serious buiness, perhaps someplace like BizBuySell.com would work for you.
