Has anyone ever heard of Aliant in Canada (http://www.aliant.ca/english/index.asp).?

This is a snippet of a press release that I just came across:

Sphera Corporation, the leading global
provider of Web hosting automation and management software today announced that
Aliant, Atlantic Canada's leading telecommunications and Internet service
provider, has chosen Sphera's HostingBusiness(TM) Suite to streamline its Web
hosting operations and to increase value for the 80,000 businesses in their
region

I thought I knew all of the larger shared hosting providers, but I have never heard of Aliant.

They bought out the provinvial telco's in Newfoundland, Prince Edward Islan, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia about three years ago. Digital data services have been going downhill ever since while prices have been going up.

They are the people who handle Sympatico and MpoweredPC (DSL) in Atlantic Canada.

Since they took over residential DSL speeds have dropped from 7 mbps down adn 1.5 mbps up to 1.5mbps down and 640 kbps up with an increase in prices. You can still get the 7mbps speed but you have to sign up as a business customer and the cost is now $535 a month insteadt of $45 a month.

No more static IP's, personal web servers, home LAN ......
