View Full Version : Mail Program that Requires Login?
Hi,
Im wondering if anyone knows of a free email program that allows a user to login, then log out. Im trying to set up a computer for a family so each member can log in and out of the email client, and check their individual mail, unline Outlook where everyone has access to everyone. Thanks.

You know what you could do is just use XP (which I hate ;)) and set it up that way (with different users), might work a little better.

Plus, if using Personal Folders (.pst) in Outlook, you can password protect them. Then, whenever someone tries to open the file via Outlook, it will not let them through unless they enter a password. If the entire family isn't using an Exchange Server, then they will be using Personal Folders.

Yep, I believe Outlook and OutlookExpress both use the User system. I did that when my wife and I shared the same computer. Works great. They all get individual settings, signatures, can set up folders, etc. You can set up users in Windows so that everyone gets their own personal 'version' of Windows (desktop, mail, etc.).

When you state "user system," are you talking about the one with WindowXP when you choose your user when the computer starts, or another? Thanks.

When your computer starts, but... can also set up users for Outlook/OExpress inside the program, though it's called Identities:
From Outlook Express File menu:
Identities > Add New Identity
-you can even pass protect it.

Pegasus provides this feature, and it's not a bad mail client either. it takes awhile to get used to if all you've ever used is outlook express, but a week or two later and everything is dandy (and it's nice to be able to resize and move windows me thinks)

I ended up using Outlook Express with the different identities feature. Its weird, the regular version of Outlook doesnt have this feature, yet the free one that comes with every computer does.
Thanks for all your input.

True, but Outlook (not Express) does have profiles which is essentially the same thing. Outlook is also much more robust of an e-mail client than Express if you need the features it has. Good to hear you were able to find a solution, however.
