Years ago, I used phpbb (not even the 2 version). At that time, it was evident that while it was really great for free, it wasn't quite up to par for my needs. Since then, it's improved greatly.
I actually never used the free or paid version of Invision. I've seen some boards recently that use it and it seems fine, but you'd have to ask people who use it what they do, and do not, like about it.
For me, I've always used vBull and thus it's nice not having to relearn where everything is, how to modify it, etc. Of course, that was somewhat shot when they went to the version 3, but I already had 2, so...
I'm not sure that there really is a best board. It really comes down to the fact that if it meets your needs, and the needs of your members, then it's good. If it doesn't, then it won't work. vB has met my needs and continues to, so it's what I use. Keep in mind that if you boil it down, nearly any of the boards meet the basic need of allowing members to register and post messages.
There was a time when I would have said IPB. That was before the release of vB3.
Right now I'm really liking the "new guy on the block" FusionBB.
If you want the solution that is most established, most robust, and least likely to stop being updated, vBulletin is probably your best solution. IPB is just a few steps behind though.

I like vbulletin for its scalability, you can strip it down to minimal functions to conserve the load its puts on servers...or you can activate alot to have a feature rich board...
and im still disgruntled at IPB for going commerical on me :P
Forums are a tricky thing to list in terms of which is best since different companies and versions of software are constantly leapfrogging eachother.
Thank you chicken, and the rest of you, I have finally settled for Vbull, I will be soon looking for assitance in installation, mybe tommorow, so if you dont want me to ask you for help please avoid the BB :) otherwiswe its great to have your opinions on this issue. Blessings

i really don't like eith vbulleting or IPB, i don't see why people pay for them, you get akll the main features in a free bbs caleed SMF plus literally hundreds of mods to build it so its just right for you and the skinning system for SMF is the most powerful i have ever seen and the package manager makes installing the mods you want/need effortlesss....www.simplemachines.org i'd look into it and maybe add a third possibility to your list. ;)

People pay for them because the public beta version of SMF was only released a year ago, the v1 Final version just over 4 months ago. Some of us have been running forums for more than a few months. Now, for someone who hasn't there's certainly more choices, and conversion to one of the free ones is always a possibility (if it is better, otherwise $35/yr. isn't much).

it may be new but seriously, i'd say its the best and i have used IPB and vBulletin.and their are many converters from ipb, vbulletin, phpbb, ect... if you already have a forum running....my forums (including the xthost forums run it and i wouldn't go back to vBulletin...)

Everyone looks at Vbulletin and Ivision for forums and seem to forget SMF is out there. SMF is super fast, not complicated and very customizable. There are tons of portals available to make it fit into for looks also. We recommend it to our customers over the 2 pricey ones and phpBB and have never received a complaint.

well put...SMF may look simple and unmodded it is but this allows the user to only get what they want/need without all the extra bloat...they have a mod for almost anything...i am just waiting for the mod the welll sell our hosting...lol.

Why do people pay for forums?
Because they like the fact that they're actually supported.
Because they like the fact that the forum is actually developed.
Because they like the fact that it's not a hobby for an individual to update and upgrade things, it's a profession, and those individuals are getting paid for it. This means, of course that if something is buggy it'll get fixed pretty quickly, usually.
Because they like the features.
There are a number of reasons one would pay for software. Free is good, but it's not always the best answer here.
As for the question:
VB all the way. I'm not too impressed with IPB's code, or their policies at all, so VB is it. Besides, VB just looks a LOT nicer :)
iv never had a vB but many IPB forums, and i really like them, easy to use admin CP which is full of features, looks good and easy to skin, many mods for it, at the moment im trying out EKINboard which is also good but lacks a few features.

I love IPB, would never use anything else. VB has some nice features too, but I don't really like it as much from the user perspective. However, either one is a quality product, hard to go wrong really.
Vbulletin is like a tank.
IPB is like foot soldiers wearing cool stuff.
