I'm about ready to file to create a LLC. I'd prefer to use one of the online LLC filing services. This is the list that I've come up with:

http://www.bizfilings.com/
http://www.mycorporation.com/
http://www.activefilings.com/
http://www.smallbizincorporator.com/
http://www.incorporatetime.com/
http://www.mynewcompany.com/llc/
http://www.llc.com/index.cfm/
http://www.companiesinc.com/

Has anyone used any of these services? Is there anything that I should watch out for doing this online?

I've used http://www.mycorporation.com/ however not for an LLC. You really should download the form (depending on state you file) for the LLC. I think you'll find that you do not need to use a service to file an LLC. For example, check out Califonia's:

http://www.ss.ca.gov/business/llc/llc_formsfees.htm
Specifically: http://www.ss.ca.gov/business/llc/forms/llc-1.pdf

You can fill it in on-line even, but I don't think you can submit it on-line from what I recall. Still, about as easy as it gets.

I agree Chicken.

Thanks for the input. I guess that I'm just nervous about doing this for the first time and wanted to make sure that all the i's were dotted and all the t's were crossed. I did get the form I think I needed from the Alabama Secretary of State web site ( http://www.sos.state.al.us/business/llc.htm ) and it looks like I have to fill it out and take it to the Probate Judge in this county. Is this the right form:

http://www.sos.state.al.us/downloads/business/sosdf-8.pdf

and does it sound right that the LLC form is filed in the courthouse?

Also, all of the other stuff that the sites in my first post try to sell you, how much of that is really needed?

Barbara, that's the form! Not exactly something overly complicated that you'd have to pay another company to fill out, eh? Those services you posted are more useful for C/S Corporations, where there is more paperwork to fill out, though honestly, a lawyer and a tax professional should be used. If it tells you to bring it to DisneyLand, bring it to DisneyLand! :D

The one thing I'd do is run this whole idea of yours by a tax professional before you file. That'll take care of dotting the i's, as you said. Ask about quarterly filing requirements, and minimum tax fees, etc. California might be different from AL, so there's not much point in going on about "what they do here" but you need to be aware of what fees and taxes are due, and when.

True. Consulting with a tax person is on my to do list. Now, I also have to figure out the city licensing thing. I found this page (http://www.ci.huntsville.al.us/Clerk/priv_lic.html) but it's a little bit confusing for me. The form has a space for one DBA, but I can't find anything that indicates how to register multiple DBAs. Plus, I'm not sure which part of the Schedule I fall under. As near as I can figure it out, it's either Miscellaneous or Service. I'm getting a headache. :)

The only advantage you have with paying a company to do your filing for you, is that they will give you the "black book" with your official company stamp and other stuff. They'll also make sure all the needed forms are correctly filled out (EIN# for IRS) and what not. But it's not worth it, because in this case, it doesn't require a degree... just time and understanding of a few simple matters.

That's a rather odd form. Well, two things, as far as taxes go, your tax advisor should be able to direct you in this area. They'll help you get started, etc.

Second, concerning D.B.A.'s, my suggestion is to go to a publication (any rinky-dink local-news publication will do, or the larger news, etc.) and tell them you'd like to file a D.B.A. They have the forms, they will print the notice (something that is needed) and send everything (the money, the paperwork, and the notice clipping) into the city for you.

I had my LLC filings completed by, A1A, and they are VERY professional and curteous.

Give them a call, and ask for Maria.

Hmm... they want $175 (to start) to form an LLC in Kentucky.

If anyone wants to do it themselves, all they have to do here is fill out a couple of pages for $40.

I'm apparently in the wrong business.

I ended up using http://www.smallbizincorporator.com/ . I know that I could have done it myself but I wanted someone to hold my hand. :) I had quite a few questions as I went through the process and they did a great job answering them.

I know this is an old thread, but I am new here and wanted to add to the bandwagon of do-it-yourselfers. Forming an LLC is not very difficult. Just thoroughly read the forms and file as they say. Some attorneys here charge $1,500 to do it for you. If you have the brains to run a business, then you have what it takes to file for yourself. :)

Filing the paperwork for an LLC isn't too difficult. It's just the amount of paperwork that can make it more difficult because you have to know what all to file. Every level of the government seems to want something so you have to fill out forms for federal, state, and even down to the city to get all of the numbers and licenses for a business. That's basically what some people pay another company to do.
