I appreciate the advice to upgrade to 98SE.

My next question is this? - Do you recommend using a 98SE upgrade cd if I have windows 98 already installed on my computer. I have read that it is better to install a full version of SE, but I am not computer savvy enough to do that - I don't think. So I think if you say it's recommended that I would rather simply upgrade.

I await your sound advice.

Thank you

I have also heard that one should install a full version of SE, rather than upgrade. To some people, it might not matter and be that big of a deal. It's not that difficult to reinstall from scratch though. Insert the CD and it should give you the option, I think.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Better to install a full fresh install of SE than upgrade.

I've done tons of these and one thing I know for sure is the "upgrade" to SE tends to muck things up after a few months. Things will just start to randomly crash etc, then system files will go missing, and 6 months down the road you'll have to do a fresh install anyways.

Better just to install SE full from the start and then you're good for a year or so before you need to worry about it again. Easy enough to do it, just stick the CD in and follow the instructions

As already mentioned, very few versions of Windows ever worked properly after doing an upgrade. Even with Windows XP, I would install from scratch rather than upgrading from 2000 to XP. Or even XP Home to XP Pro (not even sure if that's possible :)). Good luck with whatever method you choose to go with.

Well, I tried just putting the Windows 98SE full version disc in and that didn't work. It said that I already have 98 installed and that I need an upgrade version.
So, can you tell me how to install a full version - please remember I'm no computer guru.
Thanks for your help.

You must have put the disc in when windows was operating.

You need to put the disc in and reboot the computer so it can boot from the CD. Then you should have the option to overwrite the existing install with a new fresh install.

If you have windows 98 already installed - you need the windows 98 upgrade disk NOT windows 98SE.

If you can get the upgrade disk - that will work fine, I have done well over the hundreds of 98 to 98SE with not problem. The biggest benefit is the better usb support!

If you dont have the upgrade disk you are looking at a clean install. Make sure younote down your driver names for your mode, lan card, sound card and video card - and if possible download the drivers and burn them to cd before you attempt to do a clean install.

GL anyhow!

Thanks for the info Angel, I tried this and I ran into problems with this also. So I have decided to try the upgrade instead.
Thanks again

Okay, so I've decided that the simplest thing for me to do is simply do an upgrade. My new question is this:
I'm looking to purchase an upgrade CD, the ones I'm seeing for sale say this:
This is an official upgrade from MS Windows 95 or 3.1 to MS Windows 98 Second Edition
Can I use this type of CD to install on top of Windows 98? I need to know this for sure before I make this purchase.
Thanks for all your help

No, you'd need a specific windows 98SE upgrade disc. The ones to upgrade from the lower OS's won't work.
