Im not certain if this is against the rules (sorry if it is) but we are about to launch a new dedicated server specification, and i was wondering whether there would be much demand for such a server?
The sever specification will be:
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHZ (HT) (800MHz FSB)
2048GB pc3200 DDR RAM
2 x 120GB SATA HDDs (RAID Array setup)
Based in the Redbus two facility (Docklands, london, UK)
1000GB Data Transfer
Do you think there will be a high demand for systems of such a high specification based in the UK, and if so, how much would you be willing to pay?
Thanks
The server config is pretty standard there. As far as price. well that will depend on serveral factors. How much is your cost for the server itself. How much is your bandwidth, colo costs etc. From there add all that up. As a good rule and not being greedy, keeping prices low and competitive mark up your server offering by 20% over what it is costing you.
Example:
Server Cost: $700 1U custom built divided by say 6 months. (time frame where server is paid for) = $117 per month
Colo Cost: $50 per 1U
Bandwidth cost: $100/mb (just guessing here and an example) If you dont oversell your bandwidth like crazy then we can say that you only need a 3MB pipe so that equals $300 per month divided by the number of servers you have.
Total Cost: $180 per month is needed to cove your costs just on the server alone tacking on 20% and having the server paid for in 6 months I would sell it for $216 per month.
Tack on a setup fee and you can reduce the time it takes to pay off the server or reduce the monhtly cost to the client.
Hope that helps, others will have different formulas. You have to figue out what works for you.
Your server configuration is pretty cool. Many people like to host their website on a dedicated server. If your rates are affordable, then you'll easily
find customers.

Im not certain if this is against the rules (sorry if it is)...
It's permitted here (Other Requests, the request being feedback on a product or service you offer or will offer).

There's certainly demand, depending on who you're marketing the servers at.
You might want to look at including a control panel in that to make it more appealing to hosts.
Prices I know people charge in Interhouse 2 for similar ... £180-250/month (with Cpanel/Plesk)

Its hard to find transfer of that amount in the UK without prices being through the roof, I don't actually recall seeing a 1000 GB/month server in the UK... i'm sure they're out there though, can't say i've looked for them. Prices for bandwidth in the UK are ridiculous so if you can offer something decent for a good price then i'm sure you'lll bring on a whole new era for UK bandwidth if people decide to jump on the band wagon -- Although they can't if bandwidth providers dont lower their prices but the UK is a rip off anyway so it'll be a toughie. You wont be able to aim your servers at regular customers, i'm guessing large companies because i'm guessing you won't be able to offer 1000 GB transfer on the right side of £500/month. Things are so different in the US.

I reckon over time UK bandwidth will become cheaper. But I would agree bandwidth in the uk costs too much.
One think would go down well, would be offering one Dual Xeon server aimed mainly at hosts.
