View Full Version : Help desk spam???
I wasn't sure what category this goes in ... but we recently actually got spam through our help desk in our sales category.
It goes as follows:
==================================
Hello,
How's going? busy? I was wondering do you have your own server in DC? Our comapny has the smallest server can be used in Data Center. It saves your space.
On the other way, It saves your money. and the access panel is in the front. It is really convenience for people who work in the Cage.

==================================
I've never seen anyone resorting to this sort of spam through our help desk. Racklogic? I've heard of it, but I thought they had better class than this. Bear in mind, we've never been in contact with them regarding any of their services.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Devil's advocate:
It could be that Linda doesn't know what spam is. She is probably a sales representative (with no experience and bad English) and she might be thinking she's simply doing a good job.
Spamming might not be a company policy.
Try contacting them to report this behavior?

Spamming might be a company policy? It doesn't need to be, as it's illegal. She spammed and knows it. The difference is that they know that the company will receive their spam message through the help desk as that's where their clients send their questions to.
I use to get those a lot.. and I use to get people starting a live chat on my website and started advertising their site saying "so so is better".
The question that comes to mind is can this sort of direct solicitation open up any legal battles or other "cans of worms" ?
Oh my god! She did it again! She actually submitted a second time through our help desk this same spam message.
[EDIT:]
I just called them and spoke to Linda Wu. I told her to stop sending me help desk submissions through our web site and since we didn't respond the first time what makes her think submitting it twice would work? Secondly, from the sound of it all, they are purposely spamming companies because she asked for our company name and web address to be "removed".
We perhaps may have purchased something from them had they not crowded our already crowded sales desk and called us instead.

Does your helpdesk require a username and password?
Btw, I'm curious, what did she say when you told her to stop? :mrt:
Well, for support tickets it requires users to login. However, users can submit a sales query through our web site without such information if they cannot call us or otherwise.
Perhaps I was a bit too demanding when I told her to stop but seeing as she did this twice already within a 18 hour period, I had a feeling she wouldn't stop until someone blew up at her. When I called I asked firmly to "stop sending us spam messages through our sales query. this is only for prospective client use only". Unfortunately, her english was a bit broken despite the calm, smooth voiced receptionist that answered when I called their 800 number. She said "What is your name?" which I obliged then she said "And your company name?" which I provided. After hearing a few clicks, she said "Okay, we apologize." And we hung up.
Spamming might be a company policy? It doesn't need to be, as it's illegal. She spammed and knows it.If you hire someone and he/she starts spamming on behalf of your company, does that necessarily mean your company endorses spam? ;)

You are responsible for your employees actions or anyone who represents your company that you have made a contract with.
I did not state the opposite.
Yeah, its just your semantics made it appear that way is all. I don't Robert was trying to incite any type of argument. :)
I did not assume he did. He just doesn't like spammers. Not that I like them, but anyway... :)
I might be going a little off topic here, but how do the helpdesks stop this from happening? Our billing system, CE has it where user must login to add a ticket. If the user sends something through the piped email address, it verifies the email address is an acutal customer; checks the db.
Just curious.
Perldesk as well as some others also optionally require an account, but Kayako does not. (promised for the next version, though). In Kayako's case currently, you have to set filters to keep unwanted mail out.
Our flaw is our help desk and entire billing system is built in-house. We're going to implement a filtering system in the coming weeks though to prevent this from happening. The only bad part is, this came from a valid email address; a real person who I spoke to. I just didn't like the manner in which she decided to solicit us when clearly all other contact information is listed.
Ahhh, thanks for the information guys.

I get a lot of junk mail as if its my personal email box - using kayako, so i just ban the addresses and delete them.
:uzi2:
Still VERY annoying to see this junk

Wow, this is pathetic. If you spam... the least you can do is check your grammar and word choice.
Nonetheless, reading her spam was amusing. I am not sure if she intended to make that many mistakes.
I cannot see Racklogic condoning this.
This is probably a sales person who works off commission.
Have you forwarded a complaint to abuse@racklogic.com?

Condoning it or not, that's irrelevant. They allowed it to continue, and that's just wrong.
Any time I get spam, I always forward it to spamcop (http://www.spamcop.net), because there's really not a lot of reasons for this kind of email. Being someone who works in the internet "industry", you'd think this person would understand that is not acceptable, and those above her should have addressed this quickly.
I cannot believe it! IT HAPPENED AGAIN!
Except this time we revamped our web site and removed our sales form from our web page. All emails are piped through our ticketing system and she actually filed a ticket!
There is a new support ticket:

I don't get it. I even spoke with the woman on the phone and asked her to stop and it's continuing to happen. Any suggestions? Do I have to bother my lawyer this time?

I responded to her and said "please stop spamming us with these offers". She responded and said "okay thanks for letting me know, I'll take you off this list".
I'll wait a few weeks to receive another offer from her. :nono:

I've sent a copy of it (again) to Steve (racklogic owner). He was going to look into this before and put a stop to it but I guess he forgot or something.
